"...the product of twenty years of thorough, careful, and caring scholarly work by one of the field's most eminent collectors..." --
EthnologiesCajun and Creole Folktales: The French Oral Tradition of South Louisiana is the largest, most diverse, and best-annotated collection of French-language tales ever published in the United States; all of the tales appear in both the original Cajun French and in English translation. The study shows tale-telling in Louisiana to be vigorous and constantly changing in the modern world. The tales included fall into several groups: animal tales, magic tales, jokes, lies and tall tales, Pascal stories, legendary tales, and historical tales. The introductory material that precedes the tales discusses the context, repertory, language, and the story-tellers themselves. Cajun and Creole Folktales concludes with an extensive bibliography and indexes of tale types, motifs, and narrators. Dr. Ancelet also provides an exploration of the relationship between culture and language and of the oral tradition of French Louisiana in historical, geographical and linguistic contexts. --
