5.0 out of 5 stars magnificent--look for it in Europe if unavailable here, February 20, 2006
This review is from: Folkvisor (Audio CD)
This album--or rather, the first dozen tracks comprising "Jazz pa Svenska"--has been a staple of my listening environment for over thirty years now, variously delivered via vinyl, magnetic tape, CD and, these latter years, iTunes. Consisting of Jan Johannson's arrangements of Swedish folk songs for piano and bass (very austere, very clean, very "cool"; all recorded between 1962 and 1964), and largely unknown in this country, "Jazz pa Svenska" has never been out of print is Sweden. There's not a false note in the entire 33 minutes, but if I were assigned to retail it over the web I'd just make the first minute of the first track available for download, and then sit back and collect my commission. You may need to do some burrowing to find it, but "Folkvisor" ("Svenska" plus "Jazz pa Ryska," a perfectly acceptable offering that suffers merely by comparison with its companion) can be ordered from overseas, and is well worth the effort.

Candor compels me to add my ex-wife's verdict from about a quarter of a century ago: "That's not jazz--it's Bach." But even she liked the record. For my part, if I had to sell off my music collection to pay the rent, this would be among the last half-dozen titles to go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating!, October 8, 2005

My half-Swedish husband grew up listening to this album at home and bought the CD because it was one of his favorites. Although I am not Swedish and didn't know any of the songs, I found Jan Johansson's interpretations to be beautiful and this has become one of my favorite albums. The music is primarily piano with some backing instruments. The CD contains 24 songs totaling over an hour of music.
