Viva The Figgs!!,
By Lil' Creeper (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Follow Jean Through the Sea (Audio CD)
I have been a fan of The Figgs since 1994, when I first heard the band at a WEQX-sponsored concert in my then-hometown of Albany. Although the band never had much success on the major labels, they have perservered and continued to make killer albums, many times with budgets that are probably a fragment of what they had to work with when the band was on Capital and Imago Records.
"Regional Hits" is just that - a should-have-been regional hit, if only radio didn't suck so much today. "Hobble Skirt (In Erie)" is my personal favorite. Now that I live in LA, how can I not resist the chorus "no more dealing with traffic and crowds" ?? Nearly twenty years into their careers, The Figgs truly are one of the best power pop/power chord bands in the world. This album may not be the best introduction to the band (be sure to pick up "Low Fi at Society High" and "Sucking In Stereo), but longtime fans will no doubt rejoice over this new album.

you have to consider that album had 25 songs, most of which were great, while this one has 10 and is comparatively stingy.
Follow Jean Through The Sea is still great to have. Overall, the Pete Donnelly songs come off better than the Gent songs this time around, although my favorite is the title track, a rare co-write by the two. It's just good to still have this band around. Great songs, simple performances. No gimmicks. Here's to another 20 years.

Just Great,
This review is from: Follow Jean Through the Sea (Audio CD)
Interesting someone mentions the band reminding them of Graham Parker. First heard The Figgs at the Stone Church in New Hampshire where they opened for Graham Parker and then backed Graham for his set. We were worried about an "opening band we never had hear of", and then were promptly blown away by their set. Then backing up Graham matching if not bettering his former band The Rumour on those old albums.
Take any Figgs' album put it in and forgot your troubles and let the good times roll. From this album I would pick Don't Hurt Me Again as a favorite but everything else rocks and rolls, too. Simply great, buy it yesterday.
