Book Description

3 and up
Bold, exciting photographs capture the intriguing life of a group of young polar bears who spend their time romping around together in the wilderness, playing in the snow.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1?Using the familiar game as its theme, Follow the Leader follows one polar bear as he guides his less-confident friend through several activities by example and by offering encouraging words. Ford's delightfully clear, full-color photographs are complemented by her simple text, allowing youngsters to "hear" the leader's voice. Her pictures also show the hulk of polar bears and the fun this pair seem to be having in their snowy surroundings. This offering is quite similar to Little Elephant (Greenwillow, 1994), Ford's collaboration with her mother, Tana Hoban; both photo-essays lend human characteristics to animal relationships. Very appealing.?Susan Garland, Maynard Public Library, MA

From Booklist

Ages 2^-5. This sequel to Ford's Bear Play offers the very youngest library-goers a high-quality alternative to board books. Large, clear photographs capture the playful polar bear cubs, this time playing the favorite childhood game Follow the Leader, with short, simple sentences appearing underneath in bold type. Beginning readers especially will benefit from this sort of format: the text employs many common "sight words," and clues to unfamiliar words can be found in the pictures. Preschoolers will enjoy looking at the spectacular photos and telling the story they depict out loud. The book also holds promise for creative classroom extension activities. Lauren Peterson --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
