Book Description

October 26, 2006
Inspired watercolors and selections of God's Word introduce children to the suffering of our Savior Jesus Christ by walking each step with Him to Calvary. Along with each station is a heroically holy person who epitomized self-sacrifice, and primarily, lived and died in the last century. Each were either beatified or canonized by Pope John Paul II. We hope that this book will increase devotion to this ancient tradition. May God bless you and may His mother bring you to her Son's cross where you can lay all your burdens down.

About the Author

Nearly a decade ago, after teaching a tenth grade CCD class which integrated the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary into the Bible Study course curriculum, Christine Haapala, the author, thought "What if there is a connection between the 150 Psalms and 150 Hail Marys of the Rosary?" In the Catechism of the Catholic Church this connection is explained as "Medieval piety in the West developed the prayer of the rosary as a popular substitute for the Liturgy of the Hours." (CCC 2678) Based on this inspiration, the author completed and, then, published her first book From Genesis to Revelation: Seven Scriptural Rosaries. Since that book she has written numerous Scriptural Prayer books - Rosary, Divine Mercy, Eucharistic Adoration and now this Stations of the Cross book for Children. Again, Christine Haapala and Gus Muller collaborate. Their first book, Speak, Lord, I am Listening A Rosary book - has been on the Catholic Children's best selling list three times - as compiled by the Catholic Book Publishers Association. Gus Muller, after retiring from a civil engineering career, fulfilled a life long desire to study art and paint seriously. It wasn t long before he discovered his interest and talent for watercolors and in the creative effects he could achieve with the medium s transparent paints. He specializes mainly in landscapes, seascapes, florals and portraits.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for Catholic homeschoolers, October 11, 2007

This review is from: Follow Me (Paperback)
If Amazon allowed enough room for a long review title, I would title this "A must-have for all Catholics but particularly Catholic homeschoolers, parents, converts, and catechists....and many non-Catholic Christians would probably like it too." but I had to narrow it down.

This book is GREAT!! And as soon as I finish typing this I am going to buy three more copies so that each of my children will be able to have their own copy. The devotion of the Stations of the Cross is introduced with a beautifully illustrated and brief introduction of The Last Supper; then, each station is laid out on two facing pages with scripture, prayers, and a brief introduction to a Saint who exemplified the virtues associated with that station. (The Resurrection is included but not numbered as a station.) This is a devotional tool that can be used by everyone from preschoolers (lovely watercolor illustrations), converts (the text of the prayers is written out so that this devotion is accessible to those who have not yet memorized or are unable to memorize these Catholic prayers), to long time Catholics who would just like a fresh look at an ancient devotional practice. The book includes excellent catechist resources at the back including unit study ideas, discussion questions, and a chart which lists each station and the corresponding scripture, saint with birth/death dates and feast day, and virtues associated with that particular station.

This book is laid out quite similarly to Christine Haapala's other book "Speak Lord, I'm Listening" which is an excellent tool for teaching the rosary that I also highly recommend.
