PreSchool-K-- An adorable sea lion pup sees a red crab, creeps from under its napping mother's flipper, and embarks on an adventure. The pup single-mindedly follows the crab through water and over rock, passing assorted sea and shore creatures en route (identified on the back flap), until the crab joins a group of other red crabs. The pup is somewhat dismayed; he turns around to find what readers have known all along--his mother has been following protectively the whole time. In the final illustration the hero seems to be telling his peers all about it. Tafuri's clear, large shapes and double-page expanses are just right for this endearing, wordless picture book, which provides an ideal combination of adventure and security. Follow Me is the first of Nancy Tafuri's books that I had come across, and it is so delightful I have bought it for every new baby I know. Painted in a lush water-color style, the story of a new friendship between a baby sea lion and baby crab is told solely through pictures. The pictures are vivid and involved, leaving much room for improvisation on the part of the reader but leading the child through a clear progression of events. An absolutely beautiful book!
