Editorial Reviews

The collaboration between Theo Travis and Robert Fripp has become something of a familiar musical pairing in recent years. Travis & Fripp have been able to produce a body of work that is wholly approachable, frequently tuneful and always surprising in the depth and range of material that can be produced by two instrumentalists.

Follow takes the duo improv concept several stages further in a number of respects. The album was largely conceived for surround sound with its multiple layers of woodwind and quadraphonic guitar, carefully placed around the larger sonic space. It also works perfectly in stereo. The wide range of wind instruments, guitar sounds and electronics available to the players have enabled them to perform in a number of settings from cathedrals to small churches to rock clubs. A multi tracked solo Travis piece ( Hear Our Voices ) flows into an overdubbed Frippertronics piece ( 1979 named after the year in which the guitars were performed and recorded), while the album closes with what can only be described as a guitar/saxophone call and response stomp featuring some of the most ferocious guitar soloing Fripp has recorded in a decade.

"Follow" is a very, very fine album that depends entirely on its successful collaboration between two musicians, King Crimson founder/guitarist Robert Fripp and flautist/saxophonist/clarinetist Travis Theo. I have not heard their previous work together, including "Thread," the 2008 CD that was very well-received, so I don't have all the background I'd like here. Still, I own at least one version of every studio album King Crimson ever recorded, and in some cases several versions thanks to all the "anniversary" editions I keep buying. I also listen extensively to Fripp's solo work, his frequent collaborations with Brian Eno, and as many of his many major contributions to others' records that I can -- David Bowie's "Heroes" and Peter Gabriel's work come to mind.

So I know full well what Fripp is capable of on his own and with others. Some have tagged him with being difficult to work with, most often those musicians who have passed through Crimson's ranks and incurred his musical displeasure in some ways. I have noticed that OUTSIDE King Crimson, though, Fripp seems like a man not only OPEN to collaboration, but HUNGRY for it. Perhaps he simply feels differently when he lets the pressures of KC fall from his shoulders and can focus on music more clearly.

And that's clearly the case here. "Follow" is the perfect title for this disc. Fripp and Travis take turns, each following the other, and in ways which are nicely unpredictable even as they offer that "ambient" quality that some music allows -- meaning you can fit the music easily into an atmosphere that you, the listener, are actively creating. I refer to reading, writing, perhaps just moving around the house doing the most mundane of chores.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard to classify, pleasing to listen to November 3, 2012

An excellent CD of sonic canvasses painted by Robert Fripp and Theo Travis. Ambient and electronic with tasty flute and sax and the usual excellence from Fripp. Sat and listened to it on a fall afternoon and it reminded me of everything from a melodic HD thrill ride in space to a dissonant traffic jam.

5.0 out of 5 stars This may be the best Travis/Fripp recording. January 16, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I am really enjoying this new release by Robert Fripp (guitar) and Theo Travis (woodwinds). Robert Fripp has been performing and releasing recordings of his soundscapes for quite awhile. They are beautiful, slow moving sonic sculptures. This is almost the opposite of his work with King Crimson. This live, improvised ambient music is right up my alley but for some it is a bit austere since the music is not melody driven. On this new release, Follow, Travis & Fripp are more melodic. It is more tuneful, more bits of actual soloist passages and great interplay. This is the best of their releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars get ready to launch July 4, 2013

Really heady journey this one is. Nothing less than expected from Mr. Fripp and a nice surprise from Mr. Travis who is a master of all the wind instruments he plays. Recorded in a church for that extra ambient creepy far out out of this universe experience.
Fans of Steven Wilson and Frippertronics will love this the most as I do.
The 5.1 mix is everything you would expect from these two.
Highly recommended if you like to leave the planet in your living room from time to time.
