The Second Marine Division on Saipan is Volume three of a three part series called Follow Me! and records remembrances of battles by 2nd Marine Division veterans of World War II Pacific campaigns. Looking back over a half century, their recollections provide a graphic picture of what is was like to be an average "grunt" ......an 18 year old youth thrown into savage and terrifying combat on tropical dots of land far from home.
On June 15th, 1944, the 2nd and 4th United Marine Divisions, along with the Army's 27th Infantry Division, launched "Operation Forager" against Japanese mandate islands of Saipan and Tinian. Defending Saipan were
general Yoshitugu Saito's crack 43rd Division, and 47th mixed Brigade. Commanding Imperial naval defense forces was Admiral Chuichi Nagumo, hero of the Japanese Pearl Harbor attack. Three miles away on Tinian, 9000 troops of colonel Hiyoshi Ogata's 29th Division awaited the Marine landings. A month and a half later the islands were secured, but at a terrible cost. Total casualties were 18,424 with the 2nd and 4th Marine divisions suffering 4,934 killed and 10,900 wounded.
Archival combat footage, filmed at great personal risk by Navy and Marine cameraman, illustrates Follow Me!, Volume III, as 2nd Division veterans recall their personal experiences during the Saipan holocaust.
