Book Description

April 1, 1997 8 and up
A missing plane, a daring plan and no time to lose!

Peter and Elise Andersen and their friend Henrik Melchior are worried when Henrik's mother and a family friend, Matthias Karlsson, fail to return from a short flight to Sweden. Has something happened to Mattthias's plane?

Then a mysterious caller informs Peter that Ruth Melchior and Matthias are being held by the Russian forces occupying the Danish island of Bornholm. The charge: spying! But the line goes dead before Peter can ask any questions.

Frantic, Peter, Elise, and Henrik set sail for the island with Uncle Morten at the helm of the Anna Marie. But their arrival is met by secretive Russian soldiers who deny keeping any prisoners. How can Peter and the others persuade the Russians to release Mrs. Melchior and Matthias when the soldiers will not even admit they are there?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8?In post-World War II Denmark, 13-year-old twins Peter and Elise Andersen and their friend Henrik Melchior find themselves in a precarious situation. Henrik's father, who died during the war, had left a letter in a Hebrew book for his son. The three set out to find the book that disappeared during the occupation. That search becomes of secondary importance when Henrik's mother and a family friend, Matthias Karlsson, fail to return from a short flight to Sweden. A mysterious phone call informs them that Mrs. Melchior and Matthias are being held captive as spies by the Russian military on the occupied Danish island of Bornholm. The twins' uncle persuades their parents to let him take the three teenagers to Bornholm by boat to search for and rescue the missing couple. In typical fashion, the Russians deny the existence of the two adults, but two teenagers who had been in the underground know about the situation and orchestrate the eventual rescue. The escape is successful, but not without danger as the group must contend with the sabotage of their boat before their safe arrival home. A good bloodless mystery.?Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, KS

5.0 out of 5 stars An Action Packed Plot Makes For Great Reading, April 2, 2002

This review is from: Follow the Star (The Young Underground #7) (Paperback)
The incredible writer Robert Elmer has really outdone himself on this one. The roller coaster of ups and downs provides the reader with a set of emotions different from any other book. Just when you think the plot has settled back down, it throws you right back into suspense. For example, right after they receive the phone call it seems like they're not going to the island. Then in the next chapter the reader is surprised to find them going to Bornholm. The climax and ending are so good it's very hard to put the book down.
The details of the book are also superb. When they have the problem on the way back to Bornholm it's almost as if you're there. I recommend this book as well as the whole Young Underground Series to readers who love conflict and adventure.

I have read this series three times because the books are sogreat. "Follow the Star" is a must-read book. You reallyget into the characters; Peter and Elise, who are Danish, in the middle of World War II. These are enjoyable books that everyone should read; young and old. -WeirdAlFan
