Book Description

September 1997
Comic actor, writer, singer, broadcaster: Bill Oddie has never been sure what he is. The only thing he is certain about is his passion for birds. He has literally travelled the world in their pursuit.

In Follow That Bird, Bill recalls some of his most memorable... and often bizarre... circumstances in which he has found himself and the birds.

It doesn't really matter what the species are, its the stories that count. With his customary humor and eye for the quirky, Bill Oddie examines many aspects of bird-watching, bird people and birds, from the Tropics to the British isles. He has produced a book that all birding folk... and those who like good travel writing... will relish.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Birders and travel buffs will enjoy the author's account of his various peregrinations in search of birds. Comic TV actor, writer, broadcaster Oddie is probably Britain's best-known bird-watcher. Here, he chronicles adventures in Morocco, the Scilly Isles, Shetland, Ireland, India and Papua New Guinea. In the last, he accompanied a BBC crew to photograph birds of paradise. Oddie pokes gentle fun at twitchers?those obsessed with seeing rare birds; he disdains guided tours, preferring the company of one or two friends. In the Scillies, Shetland and Ireland, he seeks American birds that have crossed the Atlantic. In India he visits a reserve where a friend was killed by a tiger, and goes tiger-watching from the back of an elephant. Ultimately birds are almost incidental in this piece of lighthearted entertainment; we remember the ambiance more than the species.

From Booklist

Conservationist Oddie is known in Britain for his role in a long-running TV comedy series. In this book he takes the reader on a bird-watching tour to such diverse places as Morocco, the Isles of Scilly, India, Ireland, the Shetland Islands, and Papua New Guinea. Oddie calls the book a collection of "traveler's tales" of the pursuit of birds. He recounts the many species of birds he saw, as well as some of the people doing the watching. Oddie relates some bizarre incidents along the way in a humorous vein; consequently the book will be enjoyed more by armchair travelers looking for laughs than by serious birders. Included are 19 black-and-white photographs and some amusing line drawings. George Cohen --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
