Terrific Offering of Folk Music,
By A Customer
This review is from: Follow That Road (Audio CD)
This compilation of folk music from the Martha's Vineyard Singer/Songwriters' Retreat provides an excellent range of music. There are traditional social issue songs but also a wonderful smattering of humorous songs, too. I bought it two years ago. I still listen to it and I buy it for others.

After hearing just the first disc of this set in the background I knew I had to get it for myself. If you've never heard contemparary folk music and you listen to this CD I can garuntee that you'll be in love forever. ANd if you already like folk then it'll be a great addition to your collection and a great wayt to discover new artists in between hearing songs from some of your favorites. The best 20 dollars i ever spent on a CD for sure. ~simona

This album, and all of this series, are absolute gems. The music ranges from serious to fun, mellow to raucus. It makes me wish I were at the festival, but almost makes me feel like I am. This is a great set, and well worth every penny!

17 years later, this recording still rocks,

My husband came home with a 2 tape set of "Follow That Road" 1n 1994. It become an instant classic in our home. The tape always accompanied us on "road trips", which were frequent then, as we were a blended family with 2 kids 45 minutes away to the south of us, a son 30 minutes to the East, and a daughter 90 minutes north. We'd listen as we drove to get the kids, then they'd ask "Are we following that road home?"...and, of course, we did. The tape wore out years ago, and for some reason, we have yet to replace it. Listening to the previews, I still get the same emotion with each individual song as I heard it. How many recordings can one honestly say that about? Especially a 2 set recording. EACH song, we're talking about. Not a handful, or even almost all, but every single song. We grew to love and appreciate each artist and their craft. If we knew their music, it was like having a beverage with an old friend. If we were meeting the artist for the first time, each individual brought new perspectives to our lives, and immediately they felt like old friends we just hadn't met yet. The music is timeless, the lyrics are sometimes poignant, sometimes jubilant, sometimes sad, but each song expresses the joy these artists obviously have, and share, in what they do. I couldn't recommend it more highly to anyone who enjoys thoughtful, well constructed, and beautifully performed music, either enjoyed as the main focus of attention, or in the background.

Hello -
I was the founder and manager of Wintertide Coffeehouse where this album and Big Times in a Small Town were recorded for Rounder. I can not express what a great time we had during the many songwriter retreats we held at Windertide. Hundreds of people joined us from around the world to participate in these week-long events where one could be sitting in the room chatting with such folk icons as Dave Van Ronk, Tom Paxton, Christine Lavin - all at once around the tables laughing and creating right there in front of you. I wish you could have experienced some of the late night jams that took place - Seeing poet Shel Silverstein in round robin with a room full of artists at the B&B we stayed at - singing the night away for example. There were times when it was almost overwhelming to sit in the presence of such history. These CDs capture much of the spirit and fun that was experienced. It is hard to believe it was so many years ago - but these discs stand up to the test of time and showcase many who would soon become legends on their own. I hope you enjoy them as much as we loved creating them. Take care Tony Lombardi Wintertide Coffeehouse. Martha's Vineyard, MA |
