I had high hopes for the mozzarella cheese, but as soon as I took it out of the package, I immediately noticed its slimy texture. The firmness is what you would expect from a product made with agar agar, again falling short of my expectations. The cheese did not have much of a taste at all, either straight out of the package or when heated. It did not melt as well as Daiya cheese but was instead very watery.

I could put all of this aside if the nutritional information was more compelling. But 7 grams of fat for only one gram of protein and zero flavor make this an all around disappointment. I support the growth of plant based companies, and I hope that their other products are perhaps better than this one. But if you just need a basic cheese, I would go with Daiya. And if you are looking for something more fancy, Door86 has some amazing artisan cheeses.

I made my previous vegan mac n cheese with Veggie Slices brand. The package says "may contain lactose"...so if they aren't sure it's completely vegan, how can you be sure? Anyway it worked for my mac n cheese and then I found this stuff. I heard mixed reviews about it, either people loved it or hated it. I decided to try it. Not bad for a cheese alternative. I don't like people who complain "ew it's gross not even like real cheese!". What part of "vegan cheese alternative" did you miss? If you want real cheese, get real cheese or make your own. So I love Amy's brand soy mac n cheeze and wanted to make my own, without all those preservatives and crap, even though it's all natural. I will probably alternate between this and the Veggie Slices brand, until something better comes out. But for being actual vegan cheese, it is pretty darn good!

We tried this last night for nachos. The flavor was acceptable, the texture was good, melts OK. Try Daiya shredded cheddar instead. Very good flavor, good texture, melts OK, also vegan & gluten free.

These cheeses have recently undergone recipe changes. This company changed suppliers, and the new suppliers have quietly slipped in ingredients that produce MSG in the cheeses. I only discovered this when I made a pizza with the mozzarella and broke out in terrible hives fifteen minutes after finishing a few slices. I am very allergic to MSG. The new ingredients are autolyzed yeast, soy protein, and a few others that are a source of glutamic acid which forms MSG when it combines with free sodium, supplied by the salt in these products. Avoid these cheeses, if you are allergic to MSG. They used to be my favorite cheeses, as I'm vegan, but now I can't eat them. UPDATE, 9/18/15: Added two stars. This company is now making a mozzarella without MSG, or, at least, without anything that triggers my MSG allergic reaction. It comes in a plastic form-fitting tub, of sorts, with a peel off top. Look around, and you may find it at a health food grocery store. It doesn't melt very well, so shred it, if you're baking with it. It does taste very good.

I regularly purchase a different brand of vegan cheddar, but this was on sale at my local store, so I gave it a try. Oh boy. Disgusting. No way is it edible out of the package, so I tried it cooked. Still no dice. The texture is nauseating. It is gritty and soggy. It doesn't melt (separates). It has no flavor. Just awful, awful, awful.

I am really happy with the mozzarella Follow Your Heart vegan cheese. I haven't tried the other varieties (like Cheddar) yet. The mozzarella melts nicely on pizza and tastes almost as good as real mozzarella cheese. When I stopped eating dairy, I thought I would never get to have pizza again. I am glad I was wrong! I have also tried the Daiya mozzarella shreds on pizza and I am not a fan. I also do not like the Amy's vegan mac n' cheese. I do like Veggie Slices in the Pepper Jack flavor, but it is not entirely dairy free because it has casein (milk protein) in it. The Follow Your Heart mozzarella is the best vegan cheese I've tried so far.
