4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book, January 14, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Follow the Line through the House (Hardcover)
This book is beautifully illustrated. The plot of the story is to follow a line through the rooms of a house to see what things and treasures are in the house. The line, frankly, is a little too complicated for little fingers to follow (my almost 3 year old girl cannot do it), but the book has beautiful pictures. I think this book will draw children who love art, who are emotional, and who are intuitive; but it will not entice the kid who loves a good plot and is matter-of-fact. I can imagine my daughter curling up in bed and looking at the pictures over and over. My 4 year old son will find this book very boring.

5.0 out of 5 stars EVERYONE SHOULD OWN THIS BOOK!, June 3, 2011
This review is from: Follow the Line through the House (Hardcover)
Our son (who is now 3, 4 in August) adores this book. The artwork is fantastic, very expressive with page after page filled with objects drawn in a very loose abstract but distinctive fashion. Night after night I would `read' the book to him but rather than really reading the book TO him (theres not much text), it was the illustrations I would ask him about and he would start to memorize and really comprehend. For instance, there is a double page spread with stuff that would be in a refrigerator (carrots, beets, olives, cheese, cake, bacon, a Robot (!)), that really is beautiful and we are proud to say he now knows what many different types of food/produce look like. He can easily identify when we are at a supermarket when I point things out and ask him what they are. There is a spread with tools, one with a basement, one with a bathroom, one with a medicine cabinet, all done in this great scandinavian simplicity. I HIGHLY recommend all of her books but this one is hands down our fave! It is fun, dynamic and really engaging!

4.0 out of 5 stars Follow the Line Through the House - Ahgoo Review, November 20, 2011
This review is from: Follow the Line through the House (Hardcover)
This book is published by Viking and I love it. If you have an Etch-a-Sketch I strongly suggest sitting down with it and attempting to created the lines on the pages. There is much to see and learn as we travel through the house. The book is recommended for children 4 and up but children as young as 2 or 3 may be able to enjoy the story. The end of the book asks a few questions that will encourage the young reader to go back to start and read it again and again.

The creative element of the book mixed with the encouragement of sorting skills and early math skills is near genius. Kids will love looking through tool boxes, toy boxes, refrigerators and more. The reader will be able to sit with their child and point out different objects found in various locations. Children will quickly learn that a robot belongs in a toy box rather than the refrigerator. With simple illustrations this book is engaging to little eyes. I strongly suggest it for every bookshelf.

My daughter took out an earlier book in this series and loved to read it daily. So this was an easy choice for the Easter bunny to bring to her! This book is just as amazing!

5.0 out of 5 stars FUN FUN FUN, January 3, 2011

This review is from: Follow the Line through the House (Hardcover)
This was purchased for my daughter two years ago. She and my son still love these books. He got the other one (with a black cover?) They love following the line through every page. There are fun tasks on every page as well-- look and find, count the whatever... The illustrations are fabulous. Quirky, fun and intricate. (I'm a graphic designer so appreciate the clever design of this book.)

My kids love looking/reading these books in bed before sleep, and in the car while traveling. They are wonderful books that hold attention for a very long time! I even enjoy looking at them!

Love your books Laura!! Great job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for teaching ELLs, December 3, 2009

The right book to teach ELLs in terms of topic and the language. It is useful with beginners who are school-aged and need practice asking and answering questions and learning the names for concrete objects. There are so few books with easy English that are not on toddler topics, but this is one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing for kids, August 28, 2009

This review is from: Follow the Line through the House (Hardcover)
This book was on the summer reading list for my kindergartener who rarely likes to read a book a second time. This book, however, he LOVES and has asked to read over and over. He does curl up in bed with it as well, reading it to himself. There are so many different elements to enjoy, from following the line itself as it creates objects in the rooms, to spotting the things that don't belong, to finding and answering the questions curled around various objects. My 3 year old also loves the book and likes to answer the simpler questions in it. Following the lines on the pages is more challenging, even for a 5-year old (or me for that matter!) The book combines the elements of I Spy with the twists and turns of mazes and marble runs (all of which my son loves as well).
