5.0 out of 5 stars Followed the Waves now in USA, great !
What an rock'n'roll career Melissa Auf der Maur has had thus far. A former bassist in Hole
and The Smashing Pumpkins, front woman to a side project called Hand Of Doom - the amazing
Black Sabbath tribute band - and now a solo singer; The Canadian woman definitely has exceptional talent.

3.0 out of 5 stars I followed the waves to you, November 17, 2004
One of the most arresting songs on Melissa Auf der Maur's solo debut is "Followed The Waves," a panoramic rock song. While imports generally have the most extras, here the single is worth it alone for the good music video slipped in along with the two songs.

A wailing intro leads up to a churning, stormy bass melody and a lament-like song in "Followed the Waves." "My heart lies, my heart lies to you/I followed the waves to you!" Auf der Maur sings in this song. The B-side is the quieter "Good News," a strummy little song with eerie backing vocals and sound effects.

And then there's the music video. It opens with a glimpse of Auf der Maur's face in a necklace, singing her lungs out, while a sailing ship is on stormy seas. Cut to the band onstage, against weirdly colored backdrops, with Melissa singing and playing bass, with the image of stormy weather and the ship flits in and out from time to time.

The music video isn't really outstanding -- most of it is shots of Auf der Maur and her band rocking out. But it is an entertaining view, and "Good News" is a pretty little B-side that offsets the stormier sound of "Followed the Waves." It also allows Auf der Maur to display a quieter brand of musicianship, rather than the bass-heavy sound she is noted for.

Don't be put off by the mere two songs on the "Followed the Waves" single -- there actually is more, and it's worth checking out for fans of Melissa Auf der Maur's debut.

Followed the Waves is the first single to be released from her first class, self-titled debut
album "Auf der Maur".
This song features a little heavy/grunge style.
Her voice is definitely gorgeous !

Melissa Auf der Maur's transition from another band's bass player to solo singer/songwriter seemed to be remarkably succed. A strong praise can be lavished on a very talented and arousing musician.

5.0 out of 5 stars great single, May 1, 2004
This review is from: Followed the Waves (Audio CD)
at the beginning I was quite shocked. I didn't know rock could be such a spacious thing. Perhaps it's because we're listening to tons of bad material and once we get something awesome is almost a surprise! in this case, it's a wonderful surprise!

5.0 out of 5 stars The most bang for the buck, June 9, 2004
By

There seems to be several versions of this "Followed The Waves" single, and as a rule import singles offer the most bang for the buck. However, this is one of the rare exceptions when the less expensive domestic version offers the most. I'm mainly referring to the enhanced section of the "Followed The Waves" video, which is great. As far as I know this is not on the import singles.

The b-side "Good News" is a very good song although it might take a few listens to fully appreciate. It's very mellow and low-key, but haunting and serene. It was a good move to not include this song on the album, as it would probably be a little out of place.

So don't bother with the import versions of this single. This is the one to get. And check out the single of "Real A Lie," another gem.

Real A Lie is the second single to be released from her first class, self-titled debut
album "Auf der Maur".
This song features as intro a steady melancholic riff hold attention but the guitar work and drumming is standard stuff throughout the song.
Her voice seize the listen : she is such an intriguing vocalist.

You must have it !

5.0 out of 5 stars Follow The Waves and join the adventure, May 1, 2004
This review is from: Followed the Waves (Audio CD)
The waves are choppy getting into the beginning, a storm is brewing but the brilliant new chapter into her career has officially begun..and what a beautiful way to begin!
Journey into her passion by way of her voice and the drums giving suspense to what comes next, who wouldn't want to Follow these Waves?!!

'Good News' is slower yet equally as melodic. A more feminine approach then its predecessor but still passionate.

This single on the whole is Good News for fellow music lovers and surely a vision into a successful solo career.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic first solo outing, April 9, 2004
This review is from: Followed the Waves (Audio CD)
I'm going to keep this short and sweet because there's really only one thing that needs saying about this single: it rocks, and you must buy it. Who ever hears of the bassist who went solo and actually made good? Auf Der Maur has, all respect due, pulled off the unexpected and easily surpassed everything she did with Hole or Smashing Pumpkins in just a few minutes of pure rock thrill. The best single of 2004? If you like your music hard and rough with a shimmering underbelly of infectious melody, then there's no question.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breaking the Waves, April 9, 2004

Auf Der Maur breaks off on her own with her solo debut in a hard and heavy way. Proving women can rock just as hard as anyone. Her first single 'Followed The Waves' will definately open some eyes, and some ears. The ex Hole/Smashing Pumpkins bassist shows her true talent as she leads the songs with her powerful voice. If this is any indication of what the rest of the CD will be like (which comes out May 15th) it will definately be in the top 5 CDs of the year!
