This review is from: Following Amelia Earhart: Heroines of the Sky (DVD)
I really enjoyed this video/DVD as I am an admirer of Amelia Earhart and her bravery and determination to achieve things aeronautical that at that time only men were doing and what it was considered women were incapable of. I especially enjoyed the film footage of Amelia and hearing her voice and what she had to say. I also found Linda Finch's plan to fly around the world via the Equator a worthwhile challenge and the footage showing her getting her identical Electra plane repaired and safe to fly in was of great interest. I felt that she so admired Amelia that she wanted to prove that it could be done, and did so in Amelia's memory. However,I have three criticisms of this rather short video/DVD. One is that Amelia's navigator,Fred Noonan, doesn't even get a mention, and if I didn't know of him,I would have assumed Amelia flew the plane solo, whereas in fact Fred also took the same risks as she took, and ultimately disappeared and I assume perished along with Amelia. If I was a member of Fred Noonan's family I wouldn't be too pleased that this programme failed to even give him a mention! I realize the series is called 'Heroines of the Sky' but even so Fred Noonan should have been acknowledged for his role and loss of life in this round-the-world via the Equator flight. My second criticism is that the voice of Amelia, when extracts were read, was that of a British female named Emma Bufton - who just so happened to be the director and writer of this biographical programme! Surely as Amelia was American they could have got an American actress etc to read Amelia's words! My last criticism is that the video/DVD was released,or shown to schools etc, before Linda made her flight, and so watching this you are not aware if she actually attempted the flight in the end, successfully completed the flight or perished in the attempt. It was only by looking her name up on my computer that I was able to establish she did in fact successfully complete the flight attempted by Amelia and Fred Noonan half a century and more previously. I feel the video/DVD should at least have notified the viewer of this fact, even if no footage of her doing so was shown, but just a caption written on the screen to notify the viewer she had done it successfully, even if it meant delaying the video/DVDs release to do so. Then the whole challenge would have gone full circle and we would be aware of Amelia's failed attempt and ultimately Linda's success.
