5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Mystery, May 22, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Following Fake Man (Paperback)
A compassionate and exciting novel, Following Fake Man tells the story of a boy who is yearning to know the truth.
Homer Winthrop is a moody city boy from Boston, MA. His father died when he was two, and his mother suddenly has migraine headaches or is struck dumb when he askes about his father. But this summer, things are different. Homer, his mom, and his housekeeper all go on a vacation to Herring Cove, ME, his father's hometown. Once there Homer meets Roger Sweeney, and they both get wrapped up in a mystery complete with disguises, supposed smugglers, and Homer's father's past. In the end NOTHING is what they expect.
I really enjoyed reading about Homer's progression through his mysterious past. Anyone with a 'sweet tooth' for mystery would!

4.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievingly Strange Mystery, January 3, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Following Fake Man (Hardcover)
The main character Homer Winthrop. He overcomes many fears that he has had when he lived in Boston. He has a vacation in Maine and meets a boy. His friend Roger helps him overcome being brave and cowardly. WIth his friend he is on a mission. He went to a shop and saw a man he was wearing makeup. Homer automatically thinks he is smuggling something like drugs. That is not how it turns out.
I think Following Fake Man was very intense. It is very plot-driven. I like the book because it has different views from the characters. All the characters express there opinion's very well. They have there own little journal and they write things about what people could have done better or worse or could work on. The characters really express things about themselves and the Homer's mother and maid write things about Homer and Homer writes things about them.
The style of this book is first person as I said all the characters express there opinion and there is a lot of description.
I would rate this book a four. It has excellent description. Why I rated this book a four is because it is not the best book I have ever read it is an awesome book but not the best I have read.

Homer gets a chance to learn about his dead father when he and his mother go to Maine for the summer. While there he meets a new friend who tells him about a mysterious man he has been following. These two threads are wonderfully connected at the end of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars the most compelling book ever, April 16, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Following Fake Man (Paperback)
I really loved this book i loved the twisted and interisting lives of each caractor and how well the auther descriced wach of them. another thing i loved is how the auther descrided each and every thought of the caractor so well. one of the greatist and most compelling things the auter did is when he describes all the advntures that Homer has and the twinstng and turning adventures and the the auther does a good job in leading you on one way of thinking but at the end the end you find out that it was the rong way of thought and the twist that occures. and at the end how will the auther slowley and descriptlievely brings the story to a great close.....................................

4.0 out of 5 stars FFM review, March 28, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Following Fake Man (Paperback)
The story is about Homer Winthrop, his mother and Roger, Homer's friend. The setting is in Maine, where their old house is located. The Winthrops return to Maine unexpectedly, from their home in Boston.
When they arrive, Homer goes to his old room which he thinks is special, because it still has some of his old stuff in it. Homer re-unites with Roger, a neighbor.
Roger tells Homer about a strange man who dresses up like an older person and wears a wig. They call him "Fake Man." As the story unfolds, Fake Man helps Homer find out about his dad, who had died when Homer was only two years old.. This is information that his mother would never talk to him about.
In the end, Homer and Roger find some old stuff belonging to Homer's dad. They use these things to make a tribute to his dad, since Homer now understands what actually happened.
I thought the book was interesting and would recommend it to my friends and anyone who reads this review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five Stars! Fantastic!, January 23, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Following Fake Man (Paperback)
Following Fake Man is a fantastic book! I give it five stars *****! It is a mystery to Homer what happened to his dead dad, who was he, and why won't his mom say anything about him? It has bits of humor in it too because it shows some diary entries with some hysterical pictures. It also is funny because there is a mysterious, "Fake Man," who wears a...disguise! Homer and his weird friend spy on him. I was very touched at the end when Homer finds out the truth about his dad. A great must-read story! A page-turner! You won't want to put it down!

4.0 out of 5 stars Mystifying- Following Fake Man, November 15, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Following Fake Man (Paperback)
Who is Fake Man? This is the first question that came to my mind when I saw the title of this book. Without giving the story away, Fake Man is a key to Homer Winthrop's unknown past, but Homer doesn't know that. This is how everything started; Homer and his mother go to Maine where he finds a friend named Roger Sweeney and Roger was the one to spy on Fake Man first, then Homer came with him. What is Homer's unknown past you may ask? Well, he wants to know about his father and whenever he asks his mother, she gets a headache. Somehow Homer has a feeling everything happened in Maine. This book is a complete exhilaration for those who love mystery and adventure.
