Editorial Reviews

Review

"Lee Martindale's slender collection of fat fantasies is chock full of pointedly great fun! Read it and have a blast!" -- Sharon Lee, Co-Author of Plan B

...(Martindale)take(s) on issues few dare approach, and even fewer can handle with her style and flair; ... .9999 gold. -- Mark Shepherd, Author of Elvendude and Blackrose Avenue

About the Author

Lee Martindale knows a thing or three about living a full-figured life in a small-minded world. She’s been doing it for more than twenty years as one of the leaders of the size rights movement and a major voice against weight discrimination and medical mistreatment of people of size. And for the last ten years, she’s been teaching others to do the same in the pages of Rump Parliament Magazine, the size issues activism publication she founded. When others describe their shapes in terms of apples and pears, she describes hers as the body of a goddess - the Venus of Willendorf. Her standard response to comments about her being “overweight” is “Over WHOSE Weight?” She is, without apologies, “fat and fabulous”.

Lee knows something about fantasy and science fiction, as well. Her short stories have appeared in Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Fantasy Magazine, three MZB_edited anthologies, Kinships Magazine, Outside The Box: The Best Short Fiction From Bookface.Com, and, (co-writing with Bradley H. Sinor) Yard Dog Press’ Bubbas Of The Apocalypse. She is also the editor of the groundbreaking and highly-acclaimed anthology Such A Pretty Face: Tales of Power & Abundance from Meisha Merlin Publishing.

Lee is active in the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism. Her hobbies include making music, playing with sharp steel, and breaking stereotypes whenever possible. She and her husband George live in Plano, Texas.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful little book!, July 4, 2001

This review is from: The Folly Of Assumption (Paperback)
I have known Lee for about a year now. I picked up her latest book at a Convention here in Houston. I know that Lee is a Large Size Activisit. Meaning that she is a fighter for Fat Rights. The stories in this book go along with that theme. A few days after the convention I picked up the book. I am a fairly slow reader...but I sucked these stories up like they were ice water on a hot Texas summerday. All of the stories were just little treats to be savored. I will definatly read this book again. My only complaint is that the book was not longer. I hope that there will be a second vomume soon. I encourage everyone to pick this one up.

5.0 out of 5 stars I really loved this book., February 22, 2006

Lee Martindale plays with all sorts of literary and genre conventions and manages to make every one of them work for her in a totally unexpected way. She's a terrific writer, has a wonderful imagination, and a political perspective I agree with completely. I wish her work were better known, included in all sorts of anthologies that were required reading in schools of all levels. Her work can really create changes in people's hearts and minds about fat prejudice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Intelligent, July 24, 2001

Lee Martindale's "The Folly of Assumption" is an intelligent and witty collection os short stories that inspire and enthrall the reader. Lee takes the common stereotypes of beauty and ability and turns them on their ears. The emergence of of heroes of size and substance as exciting, vibrant, beautiful people is something long overdue. This collection is sorely needed, appreciated, and worth reading over and over again.
