Editorial Reviews

This program traces Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev's partnership from its glorious inception in 1962 (in Giselle at Covent Garden), to its grand finale some 17 years later. It is unique that it includes rare, behind-the-scene footage of both dancers.

I started following Rudolf Nureyev's career early in the 60's when I first saw him on a half-hour TV series (was it the Bell Telephone Hour? Does anybody remember?). I remember being stopped in my tracks as he projected his balletic magic even over my tiny TV. Then when I saw him dance "Romeo and Juliet" with the Royal Ballet, partnered with Margo Fonteyn, it was the high point of my ballet watching. I saw the movie four times, and in this video, the two most memorable scenes are repeated: the balcony scene, and the scene in the tomb in which Romeo dances with the seemingly-lifeless Juliet.
Margot Fonteyn (note that she gets top billing) is still my favorite ballerina, and Nureyev has always been, and will always be, my favorite male performer. They both project their personalities into their performances: he, with magnificient self-assuredness and astounding technique (especially in his younger days) combined with an amazing partnering ability which focuses your attention on the ballerina when it is her turn to display her talents. When they dance together on equal terms, as in the two scenes mentioned above, they project the perfect image of two lovers who almost dare not believe that love is happening to them. Could it be a reflection of their actual lives...?
Their personal lives are fascinating in themselves: Nureyev being born on a train in a desolate region of Russia and almost forcing himself as an outsider into official balletic circles; and Fonteyn, the "ideal" (in the sense that D. H. Lawrence uses the word, meaning "mental") accomplished dancer who. almost at the end of her career, is revitalized and sensualized by dancing with Nureyev, who is half her age.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five stars are not enough! February 13, 2000
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
No matter how many times I have watched this video I remain entranced. From time to time we are fortunate enough to witness magic, enchantment, something so beautiful it seems to be beyond all that is physical. Such is the partnership between these two people. Their personal lives tell of their ability to overcome great obstacles and adversity. Nothing stopped their creation of beauty, their pursuit of excellence and the inspiration and joy they gave to others. Having seen both of them dance, to be able to recapture the experience with this video is a delight. For those who never saw them, this offers an opportunity to experience the enchantment and magic of twolegends. For those who have seen either or both, this is the opportunity to relive the sheer joy. To the previous reviewer YES YES absolutely love this video, particularly scenes from Romeo and Juliet!

5.0 out of 5 stars Andromeda February 8, 2006
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Once again it is refreshing to see such videos that are important historical accounts of ballet dancers. Margot Fonteyn, the lady of the dance world, and Nureyev, a maverick, formed such a pair and complemented each other so well and this is clear from watching this footage. Both gained much from the partnership, Fonteyn becoming more bold and passionate and Nureyev absorbing all of her proper schooling. The dancing was wonderful but more importantly, the descriptions of how they worked together to become a dance couple of the highest attainable quality make this a worthwhile addition to any dance library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and riveting! July 13, 2008
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
What a treasure! A fascinating history of the incredible dancing careers of two of the biggest stars in the world of ballet. Fonteyn and Nureyev were extraordinary in their dynamic dancing, with fire, energy and virility coming through on the part of Nureyev. I for one am very glad that Nureyev defected from Russia while on tour in France. Otherwise, many of us would never have the opportunity to witness and enjoy his incredible dancing abilities. His grace, presentation and leaps leave me breathless and in awe. The commentaries by people from the world of ballet are very interesting and informative. A wonderful addition to anyone's music library, not just for the beauty of the ballet, but for the history of their work together in a ballet partnership to be long remembered.

4.0 out of 5 stars Docu-bio of Fonteyn & Nureyev March 23, 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This documentary shows selective performance clips of the two famous dancers, as well as a few interviews (mostly of Nureyev), news stories wherein they made headlines, and commentary by people who knew them and highly praised them. The most interesting ballet excerpts for me were "Marguerite & Armand" which I saw them dance at the Met in NY in the 1970s, and which renewed a beautiful memory of their tremendous acting abilities in those roles; and "Romeo & Juliet" which also emphasized their romantic partnership to full advantage. "Birthday Offering" is briefly shown, both in amusing rehearsal with choreographer Frederick Ashton and after the performance (Antoinette Sibley and Anthony Dowell, the second famous Royal Ballet partnership of the 70s, are briefly seen on the receiving line next to them), also "Le Corsaire" which was such a great showcase for Nureyev's leaps and bounds, and the ethereal "Les Sylphides." An ambitious documentary with limited scope, left you wanting more though it ran 90 minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fonteyn and Nureyev The Perfect Partnership May 17, 2008

That overworked word "magical", seems to be the only appropriate one.
Their artistry and chemistry was mesmerizing. I understand that an updated, enhanced edition was made and I would love to have it, if available.
