Book Description

December 29, 1997
Food allergy sufferers can find their own food allergies

Tiredness, irritability, poor concentration, headaches, cramps, diarrhea, congestion - food allergy causes or aggrivates these and other illnesses. The foods most commonly responsible contain certain dietary chemicals: monosodium glutamate (MSG), low calorie sweeteners, and the excess acid and refined sugar of our modern diet. Experience gained from years of treating patients with food allergy can show you how to recognize symptoms caused by these chemicals, which foods contain these chemicals, and how to follow a two-week elimination diet to determine if these foods cause your pain and discomfort.

Review

Midwest Book Review Modern diets cause all sorts of problems; from congestion and chronic migraines to coughs and joint aches. Dr. Walsh provides a focus on food allergy symptoms and dietary adjustments, telling how to identify common sources of food allergy and how to incorporate nutritional changes into all aspects of life. An excellent and easy book to use.

A reader from Minneapolis, MN , November 9, 1998 His patients rave about how he has changed their lives! I work with Dr. Walsh and when I first did a preceptorship with him I was given his book to read. After first reading the book I thought the ideas seemed extreme, but I am not an allergy sufferer nor do I suffer from any sort of migraines.I then began to visit with a few patients who have taken this book to heart and are praising Dr. Walsh for his medical expertise. Their quality of life has changed, maybe yours will too.

A reader from New Hope, MN , September 14, 1998 A book that will impact the quality of life of many people. Many people today go through everyday thinking the headaches and many other symptoms are merely associated to stress. This book provides many practical causes of the day-to-day symptoms of food allergies many of us suffer from. I had never thought much about sweetners and had mearly heard rumors about MSG and the impacts it can cause some people. Also, when one mentions diet, I think about scrimping to find something to suppliment the diet for lack of choices. Dr. Walsh provides not only causes but also solutions/alternatives to food sources that will not cause or at least diminish these symptoms. In keeping things short I would encourage this book not only to individuals that know they have food allergies but also to those that suffer from many of the symptoms like headaches amd nausea who are probably like me and never thought the food eaten may be the source of the problem. Wonderful book and easy to read. -- Book Description

About the Author

I am Dr. William E. Walsh and I grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota where I attended St. Luke's Grade School, Cretin High School and St. Thomas College, graduating in 1959 with a B.S. in premedical studies. I studied medicine at Creighton University and graduated with a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1963. After interning at St. Paul, Ramsey County Hospital, I served in the Air Force from 1964 to 1966.

Our base hospital had no allergy clinic to serve the many service men and women and their families who suffered from allergy so I started this clinic. I found that I enjoyed treating allergic patients. This interest remains as fresh today as when I first discovered it in 1966. Realizing that I needed further training to give my patients the best results of which I was capable, I studied allergy as a fellow of the Mayo Clinic. Graduating in 1970, I established my own clinic in St. Paul.

In 1972 and again in 1982 and 1989 I passed the tests of the Board of Allergy and Immunology, certifying and recertifying my status as a specialist in allergy. I am a fellow of The American College of Allergy and a clinical professor at the University of Minnesota where I teach allergy to resident doctors.

I believe strongly in the value of research in allergy; as a fellow at the Mayo Clinic, I co-authored studies on penicillin allergy. In practice I have published studies on the characterization of cyclodextrans and on skin test reactions and food allergy. My practice is a consulting practice in allergy; I diagnose and treat complicated allergy problems in patients referred by family doctors, internists, pediatricians and other specialists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for anyone suffering from food intolerance., December 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Food Allergy Book (Paperback)
I have suffered for months from food intolerance, including MSG-related problems. Numerous doctors could not make the connection, so I had to educate myself through reading. Dr. Walsh's book has been a Godsend. It is extremely helpful and is presented in a positive way.
