5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a kids-and-food book that makes sense!
I just paged through Food Fights and I am so impressed -- and relieved! Impressed because Drs. Shu and Jana have managed to squeeze the HUGE topic of feeding kids into an easy to read book, and relieved that (for once!) I'm not being talked down to or lectured by experts. Their book is funny and wise all at once, plus it's a fast read, which are all great things for a...

2.0 out of 5 stars Preachy and condescending
I'm afraid I didn't learn much; there are a few nuggets of wisdom but lots of filler. For example, did you know the reason your pediatrician weighs your child every visit is to chart their growth? You didn't? Well, thank goodness this book has a whole chapter telling you so. Their facts are sometimes iffy - if they don't have a citation, it's "many people" do this or...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for any New Parent, a great resource for pediatricians to suggest, May 9, 2008

This review is from: Food Fights: Winning the Nutritional Challenges of Parenthood Armed with Insight, Humor, and a Bottle of Ketchup (Paperback)
As a pediatrician and a new parent, I found "food fights" extremely helpful. It is a quicks read that gives practical information to parents about topics that stress us all out. I have started recommending this book to parents at all of our early well-child checks. It helps parents find answers to everyday feeding questions without having to call or wait for the next appointment, or feel like they are reading a textbook.

2.0 out of 5 stars Preachy and condescending, December 11, 2011
This review is from: Food Fights: Winning the Nutritional Challenges of Parenthood Armed with Insight, Humor, and a Bottle of Ketchup (Paperback)
I'm afraid I didn't learn much; there are a few nuggets of wisdom but lots of filler. For example, did you know the reason your pediatrician weighs your child every visit is to chart their growth? You didn't? Well, thank goodness this book has a whole chapter telling you so. Their facts are sometimes iffy - if they don't have a citation, it's "many people" do this or "most people" believe that. The authors come across as preachy and agenda-driven. They appear to think all of us are clueless, lazy, and self-indulgent, with no idea how to eat healthfully ourselves. Worse, the book is really a parenting manual with an agenda, loosely disguised as being about getting your child to eat well. You should read your child books? Really? Thanks. Water makes them "pee"? Earth-shattering. Moreover, the writing is atrocious. You know those catchy subheadings you see in magazines? That. But so obscure as to be nonsensical. For example: "All Choking Aside" and "Gluten for Punishment." In short, this book has little to offer regarding feeding and nutrition. If you've been a parent for a couple years or so, and are sufficiently interested in this topic to be browsing these reviews, rest assured that nearly all the information in this book is already between your ears.

4.0 out of 5 stars Food Fights - a book for mommys of picky eaters, August 13, 2008
This review is from: Food Fights: Winning the Nutritional Challenges of Parenthood Armed with Insight, Humor, and a Bottle of Ketchup (Paperback)
Great reference for all parents. Written by two pediatrician mommys and addresses many of the common questions that overtired parents are too overwhelmed to look up. Very common sense strategies for dealing with various phases of food struggles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Food Fights is a Knockout! The perfect baby shower gift!, April 28, 2008

This review is from: Food Fights: Winning the Nutritional Challenges of Parenthood Armed with Insight, Humor, and a Bottle of Ketchup (Paperback)
Food Fights is practical, funny, down to earth instruction book that all parents should read- preferably when their kids are young, so they will grow up with life-long healthy eating habits. This book reads like your best girlfriend chatting with you about shared challenges with your kids, not like some ivory-towered medical advice from doctors with no kids. What other book addresses the "5 Second Rule"? It's obvious both authors have first hand experience with real life "food fights"- and this is a fabulous way to share their combined "mommy" and "doctor" knowledge. Make this your standard baby shower gift- especially for the second kid in a family, because this gift will last far longer than a cute outfit.

This book is a great overview of all things food related. Drs. Shu and Jana do an excellent job of addressing topics as varied as introducing foods, ensuring adequate veggie intake, food on the road, and brushing, all in an easy to read format (which is critical for most busy parents!) The book made me realize how little veggies my son eats (sadly) and how I've been slacking on offering them to him. They do a great job of covering topics and offering suggestions without making you feel like a bad parent. I'd definitely recommend the book for anyone who has to feed children! 5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific resource for my baby and toddler!, January 16, 2008
This review is from: Food Fights: Winning the Nutritional Challenges of Parenthood Armed with Insight, Humor, and a Bottle of Ketchup (Paperback)
This is such a terrific book. I have read it and use it often. It helps me see my toddler's eating habits in a new light. It gave me ideas on how to start my baby on solid foods with less trepidation. It also has great advice on ways to deal with grandparents and their ideas of "good nutrition". I feel like I have an advocate in the authors. They are real parents who have faced real nutrition issues too. Knowledge is power, and I feel better armed with this book!

This review is from: Food Fights: Winning the Nutritional Challenges of Parenthood Armed with Insight, Humor, and a Bottle of Ketchup (Paperback)
This is the best food and nutrition guide for infants and toddlers I've seen. The authors are practical, funny and offered great advice for avoiding food battles with my kids. I am no longer afraid to take them out to restaurants or get them to try new foods. Mealtime is much happier and healthier now.

5.0 out of 5 stars thank goodness for food fights, January 9, 2008
This review is from: Food Fights: Winning the Nutritional Challenges of Parenthood Armed with Insight, Humor, and a Bottle of Ketchup (Paperback)
My grandson and I always fought about meals. I'd serve veggies and he'd ask for bread. After reading Food Fights, I learned tips and tricks to encourage him to try new healthy food items. Now meals are fun and nutritious. Thank you Drs Jana and Shu for your fabulous advice.

I was looking for a book that would help me feed my child in a nutritious way. This book did that. It explains every aspect of feeding a child that a parent will run into. It helps with every situation. It is an easy read. I would recommend this to any parent who cares about what goes into their child's mouth.
