Both present basic facts and history of particular foods, methods of production and preparation, uses around the world, and a few easy recipes. Fruit includes a discussion of legends and traditional customs associated with these plants. Anne Dowden's From Flower to Fruit (Ticknor and Fields, 1994) takes a more purely botanical approach to the subject and has watercolor and black-and-white drawings. Pasta features an interesting double-page spread, "An A to Z of Pasta Shapes," which would be helpful to any supermarket shopper. Hana Machotka's Pasta Factory (Houghton, 1992) offers a narrative tour of a pasta-production facility.
