This is a movie that requires total and complete suspension of disbelief! And it's not just because of the god-awful special effects, either! The acting is completely off kilter with the story line of giant mutated creatures. Marjoe Gortner is quite possibly one of my all time favorite baaad actor of the 70's and his casual shoulder-shrugging, oh-well approach to the mutations is absolutely hysterical! No one else in the film seems to be too bothered by the giants so I guess why should he?! I loved this movie when it was first released but I was also 9 years old! If you have 90 minutes or so of your life to waste one evening, pop this sucker in the DVD player, grab some Jiffy Pop, sit back and relax. Enjoy!!!! :D

This film was simply awful in the lowest meaning of the word. It has no connection with Wells' interesting classic, despite the title. Wells' story ends with the created food having been fed to babies, producing a new titanic form of humanity. In this film, the "food" seeps up from the disturbed Earth in a remote area, wrecking vengeance on the evil humans polluting Mother Earth. I don't object to the film being made on a limited budget, but a limited budget is no excuse for producing rubbish (look at the wonders Val Lewton achieved with low budgets). The acting is poor - how a gifted actress like Ida Lupino got involved is a wonder to me (maybe she just needed the money?). The script is lame and the dialogue predictable. The action lurches and limps: for me, there was no dramatic tension at all. I give this film one star because there is no lower grading. Save your money and time: don't buy this film and don't watch it if you are offered a viewing. Other film adaptations of HG Wells' novels will reward you if you give them a try, eg, "War of the Worlds," "The Time Machine," "Things to Come," and "The Island of Dr Moreau." (I advise viewers go for the originals, not the remakes.)

Hard to Choose a Rating for This,
By SMD "media addict" (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Food of the Gods (DVD)
It's really hard to choose a rating for this film. On the one hand, it truly is one of the worst movies I've ever seen, and easily one of the worst movies ever made. On the other hand, it's so unbelievably bad that its sheer awfulness becomes entertaining in its own right. Basically it's so bad that it's unintentionally hilarious. I don't want to give such an abysmal movie 4 stars, yet that's about what it's worth in entertainment value. It's one of my favorite bad movies of all time. Truly it has to be seen to be believed.
If you're looking for a really good movie, this is not it. If you enjoy laughing at bad movies (especially with the help of friends and/or loved ones), you really can't go wrong with this one.

I just dont know any other word to describe the should-be classic 80's horror flick. I mean, it obviously is not a horror movie, but the pure humor and entertainment i derived from this film is worth the rental. Giant animals attacking people in their cars and all over cannot be stressed enough as hilarious. Thats it. Bottom line: rent it or lose out on one of the best laughs of your life!

I remember this being the first horror movie I asked my mother to take me to see. She gave me the choice of Snow White or Food of the Gods. I had seen the ads on TV (this was the mid 70's) and so off we went. I remember having to leave the theater at least twice, scared out of my six year old mind, but each time I was able to convince my mother I was going to be ok to sit through the rest of the movie. What I remember was shock, terror and sympathy for the characters being bitten or eaten alive. I was too young to realize the special effects were so bad. Years later, I found it again when I was 13 or 14 in a local video store (before big chains). That's when I realized how bad the movie was. I thought about this movie from time to time since then and now, at 38, finally found they have released it on DVD. I couldn't wait to get my hands on it, as this was a piece of my youth that has had a lasting impression on me and allowed me what I think of as a virtue to appreciate movies for what they are. They don't all have to be great to be good and millions spent cannot polish a turd. Most young people nowadays don't have that instilled in them, and that's sad. I love a good movie and can appreciate one that's poorly made but still fun in it's execution.
I watched this DVD on a 65" projection screen and was happily surprised with how good the picture was. I made my wife sit through this and could feel her stares of unbelief and eye rolls of "I can't believe you're making me watch this" as I laughed in all the inappropriate places and reminisced about that trip to the movies. Highly recommended film to lovers of bad horror and terrible special effects. The scenes I remember that day in the theater don't look the same through 38 year old eyes, but this movie changed my perspective forever and am proud to list this as one of my favorite childhood memories. Thanks mom. You ruined my life.

Spending time watching this fantastically goofy Land of the Giants type
flic while resting back at my suite at Wrest Point hotel Tasmania brings back so many memories. I got to know this movie back to front after watching it so many times in 1979 3 years after its release. The acting was superbly bad but so watchable was the large chicken from the barn, the swarm of mosquitoes, the maggots and of course the main actors in this littany of pure horror/fantasy,the rats, that the acting blended in so well as an accompliment to the giants of the screen. So well did I enjoy this movie back in the 70's I couldn't wait for it to be released on DVD, that I purchased 2 from Amazon. Great memories and a fabulous site to do your movie shopping.

I love this film Food of the Gods it's a classic so i had to get on DVD. well so here what you get a excellent transfer of the film in widescreen and options of either mono or stereo sound mix to listen to soundtrack in. french is in mono , so is spanish. But the downside is there are no other goodies would've it killed MGM to put a trailer and tv spots on this DVD sheesh, that's why i rated it four stars. other than that it's a great buy.
It's PG for Violence and Lauguage Highly Recommended Film |
