Rescued my mom,
By A Customer
This review is from: Food and the Gut Reaction (Paperback)
I urge colitis sufferers to try this book's advice, and to smile once more. Ten years ago, my mother was suffering from severe colitis symptoms: diarrhea, pain, mucus, weakness and heavy bleeding. Doctors offered her one option, and that was surgery. When things were looking pretty bleak, we came upon Dr. Gottschall's book. After only ten days on the diet described in the book, Mom showed significant signs of improvement. When she cheated, her syptoms worsened. Then she stuck to the diet and stayed on it the two full years, feeling better and better. After two years, she switched to a modified version of the diet which she maintains to this day. Mom is now energetic and virtually symptom-free, and knows what do if symptoms reappear. She has learned to pay close attention to what nutritious foods her body really craves, and usually it's right. Thank you Dr. Gottschall!

If you have an intolerance for carbohydrates this book gives you the nuts and bolts of going on a carbohydrate free diet. The book explains why you have the intolerance and gives some recipes to get you started. I was feeling terrible and this book saved my life.

My daughter had a life and death gut problem. We found this book with its suggested diet and put her on it with our peditricians approval.
She was not expected to live past three, she is now 20 and thriving. It is a wonderful book for anyone struggling with Chron's, celiac or any other gut disorder. I hightly recommend giving it a try before any surgery if possible.

A good primer for dietary change and internal healing,

This book provides a great starting point in healing all things "Gut". While I did not have any luck reversing chronic inflammation of the gall bladder after a six month trial on the dietary changes outlined in this book, I can say that the recipes are palatable, and most are simple to prepare. The abscess in my small intestine did heal within a three month time frame, and I will attribute that to the recommendations for healing foods/broths as well as a dramatically increased clear fluid intake.
I didn't have any luck locating the version of the "Farmers Cheese" outlined in the book, and as one who has multiple food allergies (Garlic, Soy, Dairy, Wheat, Walnuts) I still found I had to make allowances for substitutions to make most of the recipes work for me. Be flexible in your approach if you have other food intolerance/allergy issues. Otherwise, the book delivers as it promises. An opportunity to review guidance on changing to a gut friendly diet, an opportunity to heal. I'd also recommend The 28 Day Cleansing Program by Scott Ohlgren and Joann Tomasuto for a more modern approach to improving digestive as well as overall health.

This diet saved my sister and now is saving my husband,

My sister went from 160 lbs to 105 lbs. She had terrible colitis for months. The doctors were unable to help. My Mom watched a program where the author of the book was being interviewed. My Mom bought the book and put my sister on the diet. It saved her. She was immediately better after going on the diet. My husband is now on the diet after struggling with diarrhea for weeks. He has also immediately gotten better. We are so thankful for this great book

I originally read this book to help my mother-in-law with her irritable bowel syndrome. More recently I bought the book for my granddaughter who was suspected to have lactose intollerance. This book has some good solid advice and analysis of the causes and effects of intestinal problems. It's well worth reading and considering along with your Drs. diagnosis.

If you don't want to take meds due to side effects and you want to cure yourself of your 'colon trouble', whatever that may be, I highly recommend you read the book and follow the dietary recommendations. After two years of suffering I was finally diagnosed with colitis. When I found that out I immediately turned to this book that I had previously recommended to friends. It was a lifesaver for me. I ate a lot of apple sauce and yogurt. I'd make sandwiches out of chicken and pickles wrapped in lettuce. I made muffins and bread out of ground nuts . . . it was hard at first to change my diet, but after a while it was second nature and it was just a matter of purchasing foods to have handy and bring with me. It paid off in a huge way by lessening my symptoms and eventually curing me.
Thanks Elaine.
