Amazon.com Review

Put down that doughnut. If your weight or your spouse's weight is causing problems in your marriage, counselor and relationship expert Dr. Gary Smalley's Food and Love is packed with appetizing ideas for making changes in nutrition and relationships. His integrated approach, addressing spiritual, emotional, and physical health, overflows with practical tips for personal application. A set of quizzes in the front section of the book helps pinpoint where improvement is possible, and other information is broken down into bite-sized, manageable chunks, such as "Ten ways to extend grace when weight is an issue for you and your spouse," or a section of often-asked questions paired with Smalley's answers. Crucial to weight loss is the notion that "you need God's strength and power to make changes you can never make on your own," Smalley writes. The spiritual component and gentleness of tone in this book are inviting, and distinguish it from other diet books. Smalley's workable suggestions, paired with personal revelations about his own mistakes in weight control and relationships, make for engrossing, life-changing reading. --Cindy Crosby --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars His best work ... 'nuf said, January 14, 2002
By
This review is from: Food and Love (Paperback)
Before this book came out I heard Gary interviewed on the radio about it. I became very interested and looked forward to it being released. I have been interested lately in improving my diet and generally taking better care of myself. Upon recieving the book at Christmas I took to reading it. From the very beginning I could not put it down. He asks 'why is a relationship guy writing a book on food?' I had the same question. He then went on to prove the connection and the cycle that many of us live in where the health of our diet and the health of our realtionships contribute to one another. I realized that there was a figurative hole in my heart that I was trying to fill with food. He then wrote a chapter that he stated was the most important that he has ever written, which talks about a 7 step process (somewhat similar to the typical 12 step process) to fill the hole with the Lord and not food or any other addiction. You see, we fill the empty feeling of disfunctional relationships with bad food and the bad foods cause us to physically feel ..., which then hurts relationships. This is the negative cycle.

Read this book with an open mind and you will agree that this unique book is his best work.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Worthwhile Read, January 25, 2005
This review is from: Food and Love (Paperback)
Internationally known writer, counselor, & speaker Gary Smalley came to a crisis in his life: even though he made his living by telling people how to change their lives for the better, he realized that he was over-eating and despite his best efforts, he couldn't change his eating habits. This book is his personal journey on changing both what and how he ate. Written in a warm, non-technical style, this book changed how I looked at food and spurred me personally to make some changes in my diet and take nutrition more seriously.

5.0 out of 5 stars This rings TRUE!, January 10, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Food and Love (Audio Cassette)
I read this book after starting the Prism weight loss program, and it was so insightful, clear & motivating! Others I recommended it to found it extremely helpful as well. If you have a problem with weight or relationships, you will find great comfort and practical advice in this book. It even included encouraging info on how to deal with friends & family who are hurtful or who feel hurt by your change in diet. I recommend this as a good read for learning to eat a healthier diet in general too. Everyone could benefit!
