A wonderful, precise, well-organized, helpful guide.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Food: Your Miracle Medicine (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is precisely what the public needs to escape the clutches of the drug industry! The material is well-ordered, well-organized, and gives vital and very helpful information for those seeking advice. I feel this book will do very much to bring the "wholistic" approach out of the realm of "eye of newt, wing of bat" where "normal" people often place natural remedies. Jean Carper, you have given us a big measure of respectability with many and frequent cites to scientific studies which confirm the tremendous values contained in plain old food! Thanks SO MUCH! In a very wise, old book it is written, " . . . and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations." Revelation 22:2. The buyer will get many times the purchase price in return from reading and heeding the advice given. My copy is a treasured addition to my library. Ken Demster

Literally a life saver,
By A Customer
This review is from: Food--Your Miracle Medicine (Paperback)
My mother, a 78 year old who has smoked heavily for over 40 years was diagnosed as having acute C.O.P.D. She was using a nebulizer 4 times a day, an inhaler as often, as well as an oral steroid. These "MEDICATIONS" had her high,"speeding" day and night. Between not sleeping, not being able to eat, skin problems, hardly being able to talk without difficulty,Not having strength or stamina enough to even walk without extreme fatigue, loss of her hair and still having to fight for every breath it was obvious to all of us she did not have much time left nor did she want much since her days were spent in extreme discomfort. Folks, my mother was dying and we were helpless. Our great medical community was and is helpless. My wife, seeing my deepening concern and feeling similarly suggested sending her Jean Carper's book. I felt even though I've been vegetarian for a long time and have influenced my mother a lot she would take the attitude of leaving her health (or lack of same) in her doctors (capable?) hands. Wendy sent her the book anyway. People, its been about 7 months since out of sheer desperation and having nowhere else to turn she read the book. She followed Jeans advice and began eating hot peppers. She now takes NO medication at all. All symtoms have gone the way her quality of life was going before Jeans book. I could go on and on but I think its enough to say, Jean you have saved my mothers life, nothing less.

I learned a lot from reading this book,
This review is from: Food--Your Miracle Medicine (Paperback)
It's packed with infomation about what to eat or drink and spices/herbs to use that are beneficial to your body. Some of the infomation in the book has are: It lists foods that may help prevent certain symptoms and problems, it lists disease-fighting powers in 60 common foods, it lists foods that are high in calcium, fiber, beta carotene and more. The books also goes on about how to use drugs in foods to stay healthy which I found very helpful since I don't use over-the-counter prescription such as tylenol

An absolute "must" for any home!,
This review is from: Food--Your Miracle Medicine (Paperback)
I found this book for a friend who was having kidney problems and, intrigued, decided to look into it for myself. I am absolutely thrilled with what I've read, and am changing my entire eating program as a result. Jean Carper provides the reader with scientific facts in layman's terms, and uses a "thumbs up/thumbs down" system to debunk myths and provide further foundation for the true "miracle power" of food. She offers cardiovascular food cures, remedies for digestive troubles, cancer-fighting diets, foods to stave off depression, foods to prevent asthma. . .the list goes on and on. It leaves the reader with the realization that health is something we can *choose*. . .especially when armed with the knowledge Carper has given us.

Jean Carper brings together information that took me seven years to conclude on my own (no thanks to doctors), and much, much more. I recommend this book often, and have received great feedback from friends with various ailments (cancer, high blood pressure, cholesterol, etc.) This book is vegetarian friendly, a real plus.

One of the best FOOD books out there,
By
This review is from: Food--Your Miracle Medicine (Paperback)
Food: Your miracle medicine is yet another small paperback that's extremely afforable and packed to the brim with information. Sometimes the best things come in small packages; thankfully Carper's effort is no different. Broken up into systems, such as cardiovascular and digestive, she covers the most basic of complaints with reasonable food and dietary suggestions. This isn't another one of those common sense guides just published to make a book, however, for there was plenty in here I didn't know, and that most people don't. An added bonus is much of this is backed by the latest research, amazing findings, and also personal experience. She has many guest quotes of experts throughout the text. Beyond that, it's very easy to understand, perfect for the beginner, and even perfect for nutritionists who just enjoy the journey of learning. It all wraps up with food connections you should know about, such as the relationship findings between lupus and fish, a listing of calorie burning foods that promote healthy metabolism, and foods that stiffle the urge to cut the smoking habit. We even get a section on using drugs in foods to stay healthy, such as natural antibiotic sources, antidepressant, carminatives, etc. While it may not be the ultimate nutritionist guide out there, the amazing effort to cram this much useful knowledge into such a small book is extraordinary. I see from the cover it was a New York Times best seller, and rightfully so. Great work here, something everyone needs to know, no matter where your interests lie. Not unrealistic or glitzy and glamrous, each section is backed up with enthusiasm, facts, and further resources for doing your own research. Yet another affordable, small paperback back offers a wealth of knowledge. Food, your miracle medicine covers a huge amount - from the cardio system to diabetes. Thankfully she covers even the most serious topic, while including the more minor ones. Backed up with much research, studies, and theories, the text is fascinating, makes sense, and I'm sure works.

too technical get the food pharmacy,
By
This review is from: Food: Your Miracle Medicine (Mass Market Paperback)
I had the food pharmacy book and thought this would be good also. I got it for someone with cancer--someone that needed information but is already overextended in facts and figures.
I was disappointed as it was nothing like "food Pharmacy"--It is way too technical and bogs you down with pages of scientific fact and technical jargon. If your into that--you will love this book--If you are looking for quick nutritional information....buy the food pharmacy.

I refer to this book weekly, nice resource,
By Amalfi Coast Girl (Mid-Atlantic, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Food Your Miracle Medicine (Paperback)
If you are interested in nutrition this book is an excellent reference. I refer to this book at least weekly for guidance. The book is written in a very easy to read style. The tone of the writing is conversational, as though the author is reading the information to you.
When I first got the book I was a bit skeptical of the information, since it seemed "too good to be true" and I discounted a lot of what I read. I have found that many recent medical studies appear to confirm the information that I originally questioned. The book is divided into sections by body system (cardiovascular, digestive, cancer, mood, joint, reproduction). There is also a section by food that gives you the benefits of specific foods (listed by food) that is very handy. Another useful section lists needs or concerns (antibiotic, anticancer, anticoagulant, etc.) and then tells you which foods to consume if you have that specific need. There is an appendix in the back that outlines various vitamins and minerals and the foods that contain them (listed highest to lowest). If you have an interest in nutrition I highly recommend this book. UPDATE: MAY 20, 2006 This book is recommended on page 74 of Andrew Weil, MD's book "Natural Health, Natural Medicine".

blueberries versus pills? What a tough choice!,
By
This review is from: Food: Your Miracle Medicine (Mass Market Paperback)
If you are a person who likes to give big bucks to Doctors and Phamacy companies. This book is not for you. If you are anti-establishment like I am and looking for alternatives: this book has a lot of answers. A person can choose healthy food and lifestyle choice. The other choice is to continue toxic food and lifestyle choices, cover them up with overpriced allopathic pills. Experience side effects and stay broke. Green Tea is far less expensive than anti-stroke medicine. It may be cheaper to indentify a food allergy rather than take a anti-allergy pill so that you can continue consuming the food that causes the allergy. If you really want to cure the pollen allergy. a bit of local honey in the green teas. Yummy. Brazil nuts instead of anti-depressants. The possibilites are ad infintum...... This is practical advsior with information for a sensible alternative to the war on unaffordable medicine.
