Book Description

July 10, 2001
Here, the man who started the "food revolution" with the million-plus-selling Diet for a New America, boldly posits that, collectively, our personal diet can save ourselves and the world. If, according to chaos theory, the beating of a butterfly's wing can cause a hurricane in another part of the world, try this out for chaotic cause and effect: monarch butterflies are dying in droves due to genetically-engineered corn growing in the Midwest. There is also a direct correlation between the Big Mac in your hand and the mile-wide river now running across the North Pole. Learn the truth about foods we are eating that are, in Robbins' words, "unsafe on any plate."

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Groomed to succeed his late father (cofounder of the world's largest ice cream company, Baskin-Robbins), bestselling author Robbins (Diet for a New America) chose to walk away from ice cream earnings for a "deeper dream," staying true to his belief in health and environment over corporate profit margins. Now chairman and director of several nonprofit organizations, Robbins offers compelling evidence to support his plant-based diet. Appalled by the proliferation of high-protein, fad diet books, he advocates eating locally, organically grown fruits and vegetables, incorporating whole grains and drinking lots of water while avoiding animal products and processed, refined and fatty foods. Divided into five ambiguously named parts ("Our Food, Our World"; "Our Food, Our Future"), this work nimbly covers such diverse topics as agricultural chemical pollution, the diet/disease connection, genetic engineering and inhumane corporate farming practices, while maintaining a conversational, nonjudgmental tone. Robbins's experience as a speaker and his use of personal anecdotes and persuasive arguments are complemented by several professional readers who frequently interject relevant statistics, information and research, both pro and con, including sometimes sarcastically read statements from the Cattlemen's Association, which will leave listeners thinking twice before picking up their next hamburger. Based on the Conari Press paperback (Forecasts, May 21).

From AudioFile

Robbins, the only son of the Baskin-Robbins ice cream tycoon, decided not to enter the family business and instead devoted himself to the creation of a healthy lifestyle. He has a large following among vegetarians as well as other ecology-minded individuals. Although he is the main narrator in this production, other male and female voices randomly chime in, bombarding listeners with alarming statistics about meat consumption and chemical use in food production. All readers reflect the serious tone of the grave information they impart. The message is enough to scare you straight off processed foods. 5.0 out of 5 stars Know your food, August 10, 2001

This review is from: The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World (Audio Cassette)
Even having read "Diet for A New America", John Robbin's new book "The Food Revolution" BLEW me away. I believe that we should all be aware of what goes into our food and make our choices knowing all the facts. If you want to eat meat, fine, but know what goes on before it's on your table. It is our responsibility, but boy is being aware a hard thing when you realize the depths industries will go through to hide it! But after reading this book, even if only half of what he says is right (and I'm not saying only half of it is), you will gladly and easily make different food choices.

Reasons why this book is so good: 1. The book does not fingerpoint at you the consumer. Rather, he traces the issues back to the industry and government factors which allow for extraordinarily unhealthy practices so that you can make informed choices. 2. He shows a lot of compassion, when compassion is the last thing you feel. 3. He seems to have good research to back him up. I was amazed at the conclusions that the big disease research societies came to (Cancer, Diabetic, and Heart Associations) and how this does not get filtered down to the public. I was amazed at how little we are told about real nutrition and disease prevention. He also uses many comments from research scientists who are speaking out against subjects that one would think they would be in favor of. The piece on Breast Cancer had an especially strong affect on me. 4. The book is well laid out. 5. He doesn't get into the ethical right and wrong so much. Rather, he lays out the backgrounds of different subjects (Antibiotics in cattle, hormones in milk, Genetic engineering of food, etc), presents what the industry says versus what a variety of research and scientific commentary and history says, and then gives you his opinion in a non-preachy way.

You will be changed after reading this, and I think in a good way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life Changing Words of Wisdom, April 21, 2011

This review is from: The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World (Audio Cassette)
Having read this book, I also wanted it on an audio version as a "refresher" if you will. Unfortunately it was only available as a cassette and these days, hunting down a player for it was more cumbersome than I initially realized. All that said, whether you get the book or the audio version, one is sure to come away with a learning experience that is life changing. Robbins presents the facts at hand without ever getting preachy or judgemental. It is an eye opening expose about the food industry as well as agrifarming. Once you read it, you can't help but be changed by the wisdom it imparts.

5.0 out of 5 stars urgent reading, September 21, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World (Audio Cassette)
The most important book you have ever read. Please read this book , the world is counting on it. The most clearly explained and thoroughly researched book to date on what the impact to our health, our planet, the animals and our future generations our food choices have. This book will change your life forever whether you want it to or not. If you no longer wish to live with your head in the sand and truely want to know the truth, this book is for you. You cannot delay reading this book if you have children or are under 40 years of age. I am not being overdramatic. This book seems like a scarey futuristic science fiction book, unfortunately it is about the united states in 2001. After you read it, tell everyone you know.
