This review is from: Food Revolution, The: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World (Paperback)
This is an excellent book. With statistics from around the world it shows you what the truth is about dairy, animal protein and diseases like osteoporosis. It also goes through the recent diet fads and with factual information points out what is incorrect. It talks about the specific politics behind food. Very important book.

Having been suspect of vegetarians and vegans due to associations with "superstitious spirituality", I have been convinced in the last two months by the compelling statistics presented primarily in this book (and a couple of others) that a vegan diet is the easiest path to maintaining health. I haven't eaten red meat for years thinking that chicken, fish, milk, and eggs were healthier choices. From my associations, I think this assumption is widely held, although fallacious. I do work in the health care field and have always been concerned with avoiding illness. My previous attitude regarding vegans is now being foisted upon me by others who associate this lifestyle as being essentially feminine, although I do know they can be persuaded (maybe) if they do read this book. The arguments regarding health, environmental concerns, and humanitarian practices, each one standing alone are enough to convince me that this reversal in my ingrained habits is necessary for continued health and peace of mind. Now, do I give my eggs from my chickens to my friends or my enemies? I don't really have the heart to dispatch them at this time.

Very informative book to turn populace towards healthier lifestyle,

All other reviews are very accurate - this book directs one toward a healthier, plant-based diet through very persuasive and scientifically-based arguments. My only complaint is that sometimes it is TOO persuasive. I found that far too much of the book was dedicated for relaying statistics and reason for why this way of eating trumps over the standard American one. If I didn't believe this already, I wouldn't have read the book. I was much more interested in HOW to eat (which food groups he believed were more important than others) than WHY. Also I don't agree with the philosophy that any and all amounts of meat are so harmful - I wish he had more in the way of differentiating statistics for things like white and dark meat. Criticism aside, the book is definitely worth reading, particularly if you are new to nutrition and/or vegetarianism. I would also like to recommend The China Study.

It seems like eons ago when I read Diet for a New America for the first time. That book set my feet on the path to compassionate eating. The Food Revolution gives a good 'shot in the arm' to help stay on the path. The Food Revolution does not go into the same depth that Diet for a New America does regarding the horrors of factory farming, but does have some updates to how our food is tampered with and manipulated. In a world where we it is hard to not feel powerless, John Robbins stands as a cheerleader for the small, yet meaningful, personal decisions we make on a daily basis towards common sense and compassion. I recommend this book: it is an easy read in Mr. Robbins' warm and personal style, and full of great information.

Good Read For ANYONE Who Cares About Personal Health,
By PhillyFoodforThought "Takia" (Philadelphia, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Food Revolution, The: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World (Paperback)
I was unaware of John Robbin's work until I read Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World and I must admit that I feel like I have been missing a lot.Although I had a pretty good understanding on the ins and outs of the food industry, I felt as though Robbins presented the issue more personally than other books such as Food Politics. A great read for anyone who cares about their health and easy ways to help prevent heart disease, diabetes and other diseases related to food choice. After reading, please pass along to loved ones-this book should be read by everyone!Food Revolution is a fairly easy read and quite the page turner. The 10th Anniversary Edition opens with a forward by Dr. Dean Ornish and an introduction by John Robbins. I was initially drawn to the book just after reading the first 20 pages but it was truly the info that came after that truly made an impact on how I plan to eat for the rest of my life!! The book was then divided into four parts: Food and Healing, Our Food Our Fellow Creatures, Our Food Our World and Genetic Engineering. For anyone who is looking for the health benefits of choosing a plant based diet, the first two parts are for you! I found the information outlined in these chapters to be very helpful and understandable. Robbins also uses footnotes so that the reader can look into any of the statistics that are presented for his/herself. The 3rd and 4th parts of the book were not my favorite but still very informative for anyone interested in the environmental impacts that are caused based on our food choices. Overall, if you want to find a way to make a positive change in your life then this book is for you. This book will not present recommendations for get fit quick tips or 'express diets' but instead, it outlines a great way to gradually make a change for a healthier lifestyle that benefits everyone! This book was excellent. It was very educational. I learned more then just nutrion, I learned about where our food comes from and the impact our food choices make, and, who's influencing our food choices. This book should be mandatory reading.
