4.0 out of 5 stars Smokey's best songwriting since the early days!!
Smokey is known for his quick wit and metaphorical spunk and this, his first Gospel album, is his best songwriting since the early days. One can hear traces of the call and response style we've come to know and love. For someone who has been in recording studios and on stage since the late 50's, Smokey's voice has remained pure and smooth. The stand out tracks are...

One can hear traces of the call and response style we've come to know and love. For someone who has been in recording studios and on stage since the late 50's, Smokey's voice has remained pure and smooth. The stand out tracks are "Jesus Told Me To Love You" and "We Are The Warriors". These songs are not Smokey's first Gospel recordings; The Miracles released two great Christmas albums during the sixties, and their recording of "Rock of Ages" on "In Loving Memory" is astounding. "Food For The Spirit" is full of some of the best current music around and is sure to raise the standard for other contemporary artists.

I enjoyed this release. It's about time Smokey did a release of spiritual music. He sounded great on the "Motown Comes Home" CD, I wondered when this release would happen. "Let Your Light Shine On Me" is by far the most beautiful song and is comparable to most of Smokeys best ballads. Other notable songs include Jesus Told Me To Love You, The Road To Damascus, I Prayed About It and more. This CD is very good listening anytime. I would have preferred a lot more beautiful ballads (Smokey at his best) over mid tempo tunes. Smokey still has his touch. Buy it!!

I really liked the Food for the Spirit CD & video!
"Let Your Light Shine On Me" was so beautifully done!
My 2nd most favorite song on this CD would be
"Standing On Jesus". I, personally, didn't really
care all that much for "Gang Bangin" - but, that's
just me - no offense. Everybody's different. Let me
just say that I've LOVED Smokey's voice for many years!
Will be anxiously awaiting Smokey's next Gospel/Spiritual
release!!! God Bless You Smokey! Keep up the good work!

5.0 out of 5 stars Miracles Happen, March 24, 2005
This review is from: Food for the Spirit (Audio CD)
This is absolutely one of the greatest Gospel albums by a secular star ever. The message is as potent and theologically sound as "Slow Train Coming" and socially relevant as "What's Going On". His resolve of the "Human issue/Spiritual answer" equation is reminiscent of Van Morrison's Hymns. And yet it is pure Smokey. John Lennon once called Robinson "The greatest song writer in America". Now he has penned some gospel classics. Whether you are a fan of Smokey Robinson or Gospel music. This one is a must.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational and Uplifting!, January 17, 2005

I'm not a big gospel person...in fact I passed this CD by several times before I finally bought it. Don't make the same mistake!!! This is a BEAUTIFUL lp. Contemporary inspirational music...not your typical gospel at all. Smokey's voice has aged to perfection and is still velvety smooth but now it's richer with greater depth. The writing is excellent. "I prayed on it" is a materpiece. Some of the songs really rock..."Standing on Jesus", "Gang Bangin". I can't get "Road to Damascus" out of my head! Signs of great songwriting - NO? Buy this!

How appropriately named this CD is, "Food For The Spirit." It is fantastic. Every single song is excellent. I hope Smokey will have more of this wonderful Christian music for us in the future. There is only one place the inspiration for these songs could have come from and I am so blessed by them.

Smokey Robinson has done on this CD something each one of us should do. First of all Smokey does not refer to this CD as gospel, which I agree upon. He states it is more inspirational and yes it is.
It is his way of letting us know how blessed he has been in his life. And it is his way of helping us to become blessed in our own lives. "Let Your Light Shine On Me" is one of my favorites on this CD, since we want Gods light to shine on us each and every moment we are on this earth.
Thank you Smokey William Robinson for moving forward and loving us enough to share these beautiful and oh so meaningful songs with us. May God Bless You always.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really Good Gospel CD From A Great Soul Singer, November 11, 2011
This review is from: Food for the Spirit (Audio CD)
I bought this CD because my mother is a big fan of Smokey Robinson and because I wanted to own more gospel music in my music library. I was very pleased with this CD and highly recommend it to fans of Gospel music and fans of Smokey Robinson.
