I use this everyday. It's sooo much better than the previous Foodsaver. I love that it is hands-free - you put the bag in, lock it down, and vacuum! For someone with carpal tunnel or arthritis, this makes it much easier than the ones on which you have to press. I love the way you can interrupt the vacuum cycle and go right to sealing which avoids crushing delicate items...

I've had 2 Foodsaver vacuum sealers. The first one was fantastic. It was manual. I had to hold down the vacuum button and, when the air had been sucked out of the item, press the seal button. Plain and simple...best of all, inexpensive. It worked great for 10 years!!

I use this everyday. It's sooo much better than the previous Foodsaver. I love that it is hands-free - you put the bag in, lock it down, and vacuum! For someone with carpal tunnel or arthritis, this makes it much easier than the ones on which you have to press. I love the way you can interrupt the vacuum cycle and go right to sealing which avoids crushing delicate items. I love the way the bags are stored inside and the canister hose is stored on the back - easy to locate.

One problem I've read about with the Foodsaver is the canisters leaking. I've decided that most likely this is not really a leak. Whenever it seems like my canisters won't vacuum properly, I check the lights to see if they are cycling properly. If not, I first unplug the hose and then reinsert, switching the ends. I don't know if the switching is the thing that makes it work or I'm just making a better seal when I do this but it usually that takes care of the problem. If that doesn't work, I wipe the seal and the rim of the canister with a damp cloth to make sure nothing is on it that will interfere with the vacuum. I've not had a "leak" since.

Now that my husband and I are empty nesters, it's easy to waste money on food. Usually, we have to buy too much which ends up spoiling or in small portions which is too expensive. Now, we can buy family portions and vacuum the leftovers for later. I use this on lettuce (keeps it two weeks with no brown spots or wilting), bread, fresh fruit & vegetables, nuts, meat, leftovers, and more. It's well worth the money!

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, but with one flaw, August 26, 2007

I've had my Foodsaver for about a month and used it twenty or thirty times. It's amazingly easy to use and works great.

The only problem is that on the "Dry" food setting it doesn't seal the bag well enough to hold the vacuum, regardless of what kind of food is in it. But "Dry" is the default setting, so you have to remember to press the "Moist" button before every seal on every bag. It adds an unnecessary step to an otherwise flawless process.

I don't understand why they even have those two settings. The only difference is in the amount of time heat is applied to seal the bag, and it seems like you'd always want the best seal you can get. If "Moist" were the default setting--or if "Dry" weren't even an option--I'd have given this product five stars enthusiastically. Even so, it's the best kitchen appliance I've come across in many years, and I don't see how I managed so long without it.

About 3 years ago, I had to replace it. The only Foodsaver vacuum sealers I could find were automatic w/ dry & moist settings. The system would seal manually, but not vacuum manually. For about the first 6 months, the Foodsaver model worked pretty well, which ws good because it gave me a chance to 'adjust' to the new system. Since then, it's been unreliable. The heating, sealing strip works sometimes and sometimes not. The vacuum does the same. Turning the Foodsaver off doesn't reset it. Whether it works properly is the luck of the draw, and can change from bag to bag.

I am now looking for my 3rd vacuum sealer. Based on my experience with my first 'manual' Foodsaver, I WOULD give a manual model a try...if I could find one. But, I can't. I WON'T pay for the new models' bells and whistles, so called improvements that: 1. I don't need, and 2. don't function reliably. I will be purchasing another manufacturer's model.

For comparison purposes: I cook large batches of food about twice a year. I vacuum and seal family sized (4 person) servings that I can heat up and serve quickly. I want my family to sit down and have meal-time together AND not always be eating unhealthy fast food. My Foodsaver doesn't get worked to death everyday or even every week.

5.0 out of 5 stars INDISPENSABLE! ONLY PROBLEM IS SOLVABLE!, March 21, 2007

This is my 5th year of owning a Foodsaver. My first one lasted 3 years. Then I was told by the company that I could either order a rebuilt one or a new one. I chose a new one. It's working great.

I have abudant food supplies for a pet parrot and two rodents: a chinchilla and a hamster. Without the Foodsaver I don't believe I could care for them all as the problem of food storage would be too difficult. As for humans, it saves having to throw out so much food because of fear it is no longer good.

The problem, expressed by many on the web, is of the leaking canisters. I worked on this problem for years before finding the solutions. The company (Tilia, which just sold to another company - Jarden Consumer Solutions) representative told me to take out the rubber liner of the lid, soak it in warm water for 10 minutes, let air dry, resoak it and air dry again. Then of course put it back in the lid. This does work most of the time on the smoke colored canisters, which are called "Bulk Storage Canisters". But not all of the time, and I do not remove the rubber linings from the Designer Canisters (clear with white lids). They are too difficult to fit back properly.

The other important thing which I discovered on my own is timing. Set the smoke colored canisters (Bulk Storage) on the Sealing Adjustment Switch number "2." Only set the clear canisters with white tops (Designer) on the Sealing Adjustment Switch number "1".

Since discovering these solutions, I have never had another problem. I used to throw out canisters and lids frequently, being quite angry with Tilia for having been ripped off, as they are not inexpensive.

I don't know how I ever managed my kitchen without the Foodsaver. I would never wish to be without it again. It would be a true hardship.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Kitchen Appliance?, February 4, 2006
This review is from: FoodSaver V2440 Advanced Design Vacuum-Packaging System, White (Kitchen)
Before we purchased our FoodSaver I kept wondering whether it would be yet another of those kitchen appliances that you use a few times and then pack away. Never fear, this appliance is as useful as it appears. Sometimes my wife grumbles because I have too much fun packaging stuff in custom-made bags. Now you can bulk buy hot dogs, steaks, pork chops, chicken breasts and more, and package them in useful size portions so that freezer burn is much less likely to occur.

The model V2440 is the latest in a series of FoodSaver appliances. The newest features are a setting to reduce crushing of fragile foods and two speed settings for various size containers. I also like the lights on this model so I know exactly when sealing is complete, or when I am closing a bag, when vacuuming is finished and sealing has started.

As with previous FoodSaver appliances, this little gem features a place to attach a hose to vacuum the various FoodSaver canisters, available separately.

Though you should never immerse the FoodSaver appliance in water, you can wash portions of the FoodSaver if necessary.

Since we have had our FoodSaver we have packaged steaks, chicken breasts, hot dogs, frozen garlic bread, pork steak, cheese, and other stuff I am unable to remember. The only two items you should use care in packaging are wet foods, because you should not allow moisture to enter the FoodSaver vacuum system, and crushable foods, such as bread and lettuce. This new version system has a CrushFree™ instant seal that reduces the risk of damaging fragile foods.

We have used our FoodSaver weekly since we have purchased it, and I like using it as much now as when we first got it several weeks ago. I look forward to using it into the foreseeable future!

4.0 out of 5 stars V2440 Food Saver, March 22, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: FoodSaver V2440 Advanced Design Vacuum-Packaging System, White (Kitchen)
This is easy!! The price and automatic features came together in a serenditous combination! Great machine, and a good move up for me. I replaced an older, manual model. This has the features that matched the way I work, without giving me built-in features I have no need for.
My one complaint is that it did not come with a set of jar sealers, which I use to store grated cheese or cut onions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Product!, August 29, 2006
This review is from: FoodSaver V2440 Advanced Design Vacuum-Packaging System, White (Kitchen)
This vacuum sealer costs a little more but is definitely worth every penny! I started out with a cheaper sealer and it started out great for the first couple months then went downhill from there. So I bit the bullet and bought the Foodsaver and I'm so glad I did. This sealer is great for those like myself who want to use it on a regular basis. It has a sleeker look as well with flat buttons rather than raised ones. Plus, I like that I have control over the speed of the vacuum and can choose between moist or dry foods. The moist food option affects the sealing time only. It will still suck moisture in so you still need to be careful of that but the sealing time will be longer because of the extra moisture where the seal is. If you choose this product I highly recommend purchasing the jar sealer. You can vacuum seal anything in mason jars and it is so much cheaper than the expensive foodsaver containers. Overall great product and worth the extra price for the frequent user! Highly recommend!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Liked my older model, love this one, August 4, 2006

I had an older model food saver but this one is much better.

Why I like vacuum sealing in general: the food lasts a lot longer and doesn't get freezer burn.

Improvements in this model:
The vacuum channel "hole" is in the lid, not the bottom, so it can't suck in juices.
There is a removable tray that helps a lot with cleaning.
You can shut off the vacuum and seal the bag when you want to, so you can seal more fragile items without destroying them.
There's an attachment to store the canister hose so it doesn't get lost.
The bag cutter is really convenient.

What happened to my older one? Not sure, just one day it wouldn't stop pumping and seal the bag. Could be a bad vacuum sensor or maybe it wouldn't pull a strong enough vacuum any more. Replacing the rubber seal didn't help so I bought a new one which turned out to be a lot better anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars I use it every day, February 23, 2006

This review is from: FoodSaver V2440 Advanced Design Vacuum-Packaging System, White (Kitchen)
My old Foodsaver died after more than 5 years of faithful service and I had to get a new one ASAP. I chose this one because of the bag roll storage. I love it ! This is a much nicer one than I had before, more options for air removal and you can remove the drip tray to wash. On the cheaper models (and my old one) if something liquid or powdery is sucked out of the bag you have a really hard time cleaning the mess. Now I can just lift out the tray -- Cool !

I use this every day for keeping cheese, crackers, chips, etc. fresh. No more stale crackers or dry/moldy cheese. It can't be beat for prepping food for the freezer. It really reduces freezer burn.
