I received this sealer and it was defective. So I recommend people unpack and check it right away. I called Food Saver and the rep was courteous and helpful. Very pleased that Amazon replaced the item in about a day.

1.0 out of 5 stars Works well for a short period.
I would recommend to anyone buying this that they wait one year before posting comments. Mine quit one year after purchasing it through Amazon, after the warranty expired. So all these people who are posting positive reviews after a week or a month may change their opinions after a year. Customer service was willing to sell me a new one, but not repair the one I had...

I received this sealer and it was defective. So I recommend people unpack and check it right away. I called Food Saver and the rep was courteous and helpful. Very pleased that Amazon replaced the item in about a day.

The replacement works very well. It seals quietly and in about 10 seconds. It has sealed well although I am not pre-freezing the items prior to sealing. I am cooking the veggies, cooling them off and sealing while still warm or at room temp. A nice feature is that I can push the buttom for "seal-vacuum" and when it has drawn the air down to the point I want it, I can then push seal and stop it from continuing to pull a vacuum. It can also do this with a minimum of waste of bag length. Seal and vacuum as expected is a little bit noisier but still not as noisy as my previous model, a Rival Vacuum sealer.

I learned from my previous Rival and the defective sealing strip in the one that I had to return that it is essential to keep the sealing strip perfectly flat and to keep pressure from the gaskets. So I recommend gently lowering the lid when using it and storing the sealer with the lid propped open (same way as it is shipped).

I have had several food savers over the past few years, but this one has the strongest motor and works the best. It really does extend the life of foods in both the refrigerator and freezer. Being able to reseal crackers, cereal and other cabinet foods helps keep them fresh as well. Am very pleased with this item and would recommend it to friends.

We bought this to replace our old Food Saver that we've had for years. We liked it, so bought this one after some online research. This one's locking mechanism is a little harder to push down and engage, but that's not a complaint. We looked at more expensive models, but decided the added features, like storing the rolls of bag material, wasn't worth the extra money. This one does everything we need and takes less room to store. We don't worry about buying food, especially meat, on sale because we know that sealed in a Food Saver bag that it will be fresh and freezer burn free after months in the freezer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works like a champ, June 9, 2011

I went cod fishig in Mass and knew to expect 100 Lbs of filets. I was not dissapointed in the fishing trip. When home we set up a production line to process the fish and in a matter of about 4 hours we vacuum packaged about 100 lbs of fish fillets, maybe 2 lbs per bag. My wife cut the bags, I sealed the one side of the bag, filled it with fish, then vacuum sealed the bag, my wife transfered the packaged fish to the freezer.

I did not encounter any of the problems cited in other reviews. Also you do not need a 3" portion of unused bag to get the vacuum connection with seal, 1.5" works fine. So there is little waste. The seal cycle time was not an issue either but I made the bags as I went along, I did not make all of the bags at once.

This machine produces a professional looking product that I am sure will save us money despite the cost of the bags. (Average cost per bag was about 40 cents)

The sealing phase is not trickey and tolarent of ham handed operation.

It has now found a place on our kitchen counter to be used with any non liquid item going into the freezer

I highly recomend this basic machine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceeded My Expectations, October 9, 2011

I'll admit I was skeptical at first - I wasn't convinced that vacuum-sealing would make any impact in reducing the outrageous quantity of food my family wastes in the deep, dark, forgotten recesses of the freezer. But in just two months of use, it actually has. Granted, much of the savings are attributable to more enthusiastic management of the freezer, but it's working. We are now also purchasing meats, cheeses, poultry, etc. in quantity when they're on sale and also cooking sauces in quantity and sealing in multiple bags. The unit has officially paid for itself in our two months of use. The ability to freeze "pre-leftovers" is convenient and saves money. And the quality of the vacuum sealed foods is practically the same as fresh-prepared.

Based on reviews (though mostly of other models), I was concerned about the quality and durability of the sealer, but this unit is well built and performs very consistently. No doubt in my mind that it wouldn't hold up to commercial use, but for family use - weekly and occasionally in-between - I'm confident it will last at least one or two years without problems. Certainly, vacuum pumps are never long-lived and will probably be the demise of the unit, but a unit with a serviceable, commercial grade vacuum pump would cost much, much more and would also require periodic maintenance. This unit is inexpensive enough to justify replacement should it fail.

When ordering we also purchased an assortment of rolls along with the two standard sized bags. I wish we had passed on the rolls - we haven't sealed anything yet that didn't easily fit into either the quart or gallon bags, but I suppose if you are sealing excessively long (and narrow) items like full racks of ribs the rolls would be helpful. The bags are far more convenient and not that much more expensive. Here's another trick - when you need an ice pack immediately or for food transport, just seal some cubes in a bag. For some reason, the ice seems to melt much more slowly in a vacuum bag, and you can even reuse it.

So, my advice is go ahead and try it. If you're not running a home meat packing business I'll bet it will be a good fit for any average family. Read the instructions - an hour of pre-freezing before sealing prevents the vacuum from sucking out juices and is essential when packing sauces and liquids. Doing this I have not even had to clean the sump tray even once. And besides quantity of use, I'm certain aspiration of contents into the vacuum pump is the primary reason the units fail.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great! But read the instructions..., October 3, 2011
This review is from: FoodSaver V2244 Advanced Design Vacuum Sealer, Black (Kitchen)
I read a ton of reviews before deciding on this as my vacuum sealer. There are many complaints about how the Vacuum/Seal function doesn't seal as well as the Seal function and that sealing liquid items doesn't work very well. Wellll, if you read the instructions, it says to pretty much freeze all liquid things before trying to vacuum seal them. I did an experiment and tried just doing something wet and then doing the same thing frozen, and the Vacuum/Seal function worked great on the frozen items, but not so well on unfrozen items (when the liquid is getting sucked out, it gets in the way of the seal).

I also noticed that it is best to freeze bread items before hand so they can retain their shape and don't get crushed during the vacuum process.

I think this vacuum sealer is great for the money, you just have to follow the instructions. :)

I would recommend to anyone buying this that they wait one year before posting comments. Mine quit one year after purchasing it through Amazon, after the warranty expired. So all these people who are posting positive reviews after a week or a month may change their opinions after a year. Customer service was willing to sell me a new one, but not repair the one I had. That tells me the company considers this a disposable product whose warranty is designed to expire just prior to the machine quitting. It would appear they have done their research and they know their product.

07/27/2011 - I bought a Rival vacuum sealer, which worked with the remaining Food Saver rolls of bag material, and although it isn't as automated a process, it performs a superior job to the Food Saver. I do believe the Rival bagging material on a roll is more expensive than Food Saver's, but I suppose you get what you pay for. The Rival seems to produce more vacuum so all in all, so far I'm pleased.

This is my 3rd Food Saver unit in 7 years. I sure hope it last longer than the first 2. However, when they're working, it is the best for saving food when bought on sale or bulk. I've had 6 year old steaks just as good as the day I bought them.

I looked at the larger FoodSavers but wanted something smaller that would not take up a full cabinet shelf when not in use. We use it everyday it is so small it takes up very little counterspace as well and works like a charm. We love it and although we have just bought it. The last one we had we used for over 5 years.

I purchased this product about a month ago, so it is pretty new, but so far so good! I have only used it a few times, but am pleased with how air tight the machine makes the bags. You dont have to vacuum seal them you can just seal them if needed, I like the option. The only problem I have had is that it stops to cool down and you can not use it until its ready. But it only takes a minute or so to cool down and you can use it again.
