Bought this last night locally. We'd gone grocery shopping and decided we really needed a vacuum sealer.

When I was little, we had a Seal-A-Meal and were going to go and pick up one. Unfortunately, the places that supposedly had one, were actually sold out. This model was about 3x as much as the Seal-A-Meal, but we decided to give it a go. Got an extra box of 8" x 20' rolls to go with (I would prefer to make my own bags rather than buy pre-cut).

This is a basic unit without a lot of frills. There are two buttons on it, one to just seal a bag and the other to vacuum out the air and then seal it. Took me a few minutes to get the hang of getting the bag set up. The unit opens and if you look inside the drip tray, there are two guides. I've been putting the open end of the bag between the guides and it seems to be correct.

Turning the side handle until it locks, you really need to turn it. The first few times I tried, I didn't get it all the way. We figured out that it needed to be turned toward the back until it pointed toward the countertop. Once we got that part figured out, the light turned on and it did what it was supposed to do.

The rolls have white markings on the edges. These are great for measuring, I would put the edge near the stuff I was going to put in the bag and see how long the piece would be. Then add a a section and cut the bag. If its really juicy, add an extra section.

The instructions suggest pre-freezing juicy or delicate things so that they won't crush or make a mess while sealing. I didn't pre-freeze the meat I just did, next time I will because it was a bit juicy and it did smush the meat. Seemed that none of the juice ended up in the drip tray, so I guess it wasn't too juicy.

I have read alot of bad reviews on the foodsaver not working well. I have found if you take your time AND PAY ATTENSION to what you are doing it works every time. Bag has to be flat with no wrinkles. The more you use it the easier it gets to use.

We received our FoodSaver as a Christmas gift. It has been working perfectly with no issues so far. When we first got it, I did have some concern because it had trouble vacuuming down raw chicken or hamburger as well as other "moist" or greasy foods. I was informed by another family member that this was probably not due to the machine, but the way I was sealing it. He suggested that we do what he does, which is to place moist foods, like raw chicken, hamburger, etc. in the freezer until it's just about frozen, then vacuum seal it. This stops the juices from getting sucked out with the air and causing issues with getting a good seal. It also helps in keeping the machine clean. Since I started doing that, I've had absolutely NO issues with getting a great vacuum seal.

As with all my reviews, the above is only my opinion or observation of an item that I own or have tested. Consider that it is possible that I may have either purchased/tested a faulty unit or an exceptionally good one. Your experience may differ from mine, better or worse. Paying attention to the up or down trend from several reviewers will help you make an educated decision on whether or not the item is for you.
Best of Luck

We have a fisherman in our family and during fishing season, we use this vacuum sealer to save and freeze his catches.

Prior to using a vacuum sealer, we'd double wrap the fish in plastic wrap, then freeze in a ziploc bag. Fish froze well for only a year this way.

Since using the vacuum sealer, we are able to still enjoy fish 5 years later with no freezer burn or damage.

Very easy to use. Simply set the bag in place, make sure it's situated correctly, then push a button.

* * note * * heed the instruction booklet and allow 20 seconds between vacuums. I got impatient and started doing one after another without waiting. After awhile, the machine did not vacuum efficiently and I ended up just wasting time having to re-do the process anyway. I didn't ruin the machine, but did have to wait and let it rest and cool down before beginning again.

There are larger models available which house the plastic rolls within the device, but I purchased a small separate bag cutter.

Storage of these two smaller items is much easier than having to manage and find space in my cabinet for one large machine.

This has been an awesome little machine that sucks air out of everything i put in those bags. I have been doing a lot of food storage and it is hanging in there.

Ever notice how no matter what the product is someone always has tobitch about why this is the worst product on the earth? Not me! I recently became fascinated with vacuum sealing and made a vacuum sealer from a bicycle pump for use with the canning jar adapters made by FoodSaver that draws 30" of mecury. Pretty cool huh? Anyhow, I wanted to try to use the vacuum sealing bags as well and looked at so many of the FoodSaver models and also the Black & Decker, Tilia, and Vacmaster models as well. Since we live in the Walmart States of America I opted to try this entry-level model and I am very pleased with it. I purchase the FoodSaver quart-size precut bags, seal the opposite ends and cut them in half. Just for fun tonight I put the big bag of tortilla chips in the sealer, hit the "Vac/Seal" button and watched it suck the air out of the bag. It took some time to pull the air out of the bag and just before it began to crush the chips I pushed the "Seal" button. The vacuum stopped and it sealed the bag. Right on! This model does a fantastic job of vacuuming and sealing. It is of course very manual but I am not in a hurry and it does everything I could ask of it very well.
