I like the depth of this container. I use it more for storage than as a marinator because of its depth. This is excellent for keeping berries fresh. I have no use for the grater; I prefer the food processor and standing graters. The canister is a clear plastic, which looks much better than the smoke-colored ones.

I bought one of these canisters directly from Foodsaver. Within 6 weeks I noticed it would not hold a vacuum over night. I also noticed hairline cracks in the corner. I called the Foodsaver company and they were happy to send me another one. Now, the replacement one has the exact same problem. This time when I called they stated that there is no guarantee on canisters at all. I never dropped or abused this item. If I wanted to replace it I would have to pay full price and shipping. (I have no problem with the round canisters.)

As a marinator, it produced very flavorful chicken, but I'm not sure if it was more flavorful than traditionally marinated.

I am giving this four stars instead of five because the canister is top-rack dishwasher safe, but the lids are not.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great size, March 16, 2007
This review is from: FoodSaver T020-00079-010 2-Quart Open Stock Rectangular Canister with Cheese Grater (Kitchen)
Great foodsaver canister. The locking lid is a great feature which also creates "handles" that make it easer to lift and transport (unlike the round canister). And if you didn't know...all of the rectangular foodsaver containers use the same size lid (unlike the round canisters)....and if you have the 1 qt or 1.5 qt rectangular canisters...the grater fits in them, too.

The only reason I don't give it 5 stars...is that I think the lids should have been flat so that you could stack multiple containers on top of each other. Without the lids on (like when storing them in your cupboard), the containers are stackable...just would have been nice if they could be stacked with the lids on too.

1.0 out of 5 stars Definitely, not what it is cracked up to be!, June 24, 2009
This review is from: FoodSaver T020-00079-010 2-Quart Open Stock Rectangular Canister with Cheese Grater (Kitchen)
Basically, the FOODSAVER system is sound and well designed EXCEPT for the canisters which often crack. Many of us have urged Tilia to upgrade the plastic canisters, and so far they have refused. I do not put the canisters in the dishwasher, or even use harsh chemicals. One canister cracked, pressurized, on the shelf after a few weeks without being moved. When you call Tilia they will let you know that there is NO WARRANTY OF ANY KIND on their canisters, which tells volumes about how they view their own product.

Tilia blames their customers for the cracks. I am honestly sorry I did not heed the warnings I read by Amazon consumers before I purchased. I usually depend on Amazon customer recommendations for all my purchases. I have spent much money on Tilia accessories, and am now considering looking for another brand. Hope this helps, Ron

1.0 out of 5 stars WARNING, WARNING Faulty Design Do Not Purchase, September 15, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

UPDATE to below: I called FoodSaver at 1-877-777-8042, spoke to a very nice rep, explained my problem and they are sending a free replacement because it was still under warranty. I expected a runaround but didn't get one and can't say how much I appreciated her response. There still may be a design problem (I'll soon know) but don't be afraid to call the company ASAP.

My problem:
I purchased the 2 quart "rectangular" container about 3 weeks ago along with several small and large "round" containers. None subjected to microwave, freezer, dishwasher or dropped. The ROUND containers appear good after 3 weeks of slight use But the 2 quart rectangular container has failed after very slight use (mostly just setting around empty with a vacuum. On the inside of the unit the are vertical fracture cracks at the corners and on the flat side under the lid latch some very nasty looking curved fracture lines (4 lines appx 3/4") that are getting longer. You can feel the cracks on the inside with your fingernail. They have not reached the outside (yet) and vacuum is still held but it's just a matter of time before rupture. There is absolutely a design flaw in the rectangular containers. The round containers and the small sandwich (flexible) containers are fine (so far). DO NOT BUY THE "RECTANGULAR" RIDGED CONTAINER. The cover seems fine (so far), the problem is the bottom container is going to crack (implode) open. I'll vacuum it and put it in a safe place waiting for total failure. THIS SPECIFIC STYLE IS JUNK and should be removed from the market. After researching internet complaints I have a feeling Tilia/Foodsaver knows this.

We have this container in constant use in the refrigerator, holding prewashed/precut veggies for snacking. I find it easier to pack food into than our assorted tall, round canisters. It has actually improved our nutrition because the clear container with colorful veggies all ready to eat is the most beautiful thing in the refrigerator. And the veggies stay all nice and fresh and crunchy - no more slimy pepper strips!

The only downside is that you can't stack anything on top of the domed lid. I don't use the cheese grater.

1.0 out of 5 stars A bad deal at any price, May 28, 2010

We've had a FoodSaver machine for about 4 years and love it; we've even given a few as gifts. But we've finally had it with all of their canisters, and will never buy another. They're just made too cheaply, and do not last.

This goes for both the round and the rectangular versions, we've purchased several of each size / configuration over the years. Most recently, we bought 2 each of the 1, 1.5 and 2 quart rectangular canisters, and 3 out of 6 have already cracked -- and so will no longer hold a vacuum -- after only 6 weeks of service. That's right, they lasted just long enough for the return period to expire (either to Amazon or to the manufacturer). And there's no warranty on them!

I think we've used enough of these products long enough that it isn't user error, nor have we abused them in any way (hand washing, and no kids in the house). The only FoodSaver canister-type products that provide any useful life are the quick marinator and the meal/lunch/leftover containers. All the rest are crap, and expensive crap, at that.

It's a shame, too, because it seems that if the canisters were molded just a little thicker and/or made of a less brittle plastic, they would last much longer.

As it is, we now have a dozen or so unused FoodSave canister lids lying around. You can't buy just a replacement canister withou the lid, even if you wanted to.

On the strength of some very positive user reviews on this site, we've just placed an order for some FreshVac Professional containers FreshVac 3-405TC Professional 12-Piece Polycarbonate Vacuum-Sealing Food-Storage Container Set with Dividers, which have a lifetime warranty.

2.0 out of 5 stars Foodsaver Made in China Canisters get an "F", May 15, 2010

Foodsaver, I understand, will soon be facing a new competitor with its canister line. Finally!

Unfortunately, Foodsaver, chose to market its canisters like baggies and other non-environmentally friendly consumable products. I have to completely agree with many of the other reviewers here. They have a great concept, but because the canisters are not polycarbonate they do not hold up even in lukewarm water. And if you put them in the dishwasher, as endorsed by the manufacturer, even on the top rack, they will crack almost immediately. This is obviously why they do not guarantee the product.

With my first purchase of several different types of the Foodsaver canisters, I followed the manufacturer's instructions and only put the canister pieces of each product in my dishwasher (even on the upper rack and on the low-energy saver cycle!) However, each canister ended up with very fine cracks and therefore could no longer hold a seal, which is the whole point of using them! Now, they're admitting that they don't hold a seal when stored in the freezer!
I can put almost any inexpensive plastic store-bought container in my dishwasher and have it last forever. There is no excuse for the exceedingly poor quality of Foodsaver's canisters.

I purchased this from Amazon directly to keep cookies from going stale. On the night I received it, I took it out of the box, hand-washed the base, put cookies inside, and vacuum-sealed it using a V3840. The next day I opened the two tabs on either side of the lid to find the top just sitting on the base. The suction hadn't held. Upon further investigation, I found a one inch crack in the clear base by one of the handles. I tried vacuum-sealing it a few more times, but the air is getting in through the crack. I agree with other reviewers that the hard plastic canisters (not the flexible plastic lunch or deli containers) need to be redesigned with stronger materials. I'll update this review when I have discussed this with FoodSaver.

Hate to admit it but I am also one to have a cracked 2 quart canister. Two 3 inch cracks appeared at two vertical corners. Looks like the plastic is too brittle and the sidewalls flexing under the vacuum load create stress points that the plastic can't handle. Major bummer since it a great idea and when it works, works very well!

Update: DO NOT BUY THIS!!! Two replacments from Tilia cracked and the one I gave as a gift to my dad cracked as well. The smaller versions are holding up ok but the 2 quart is a no go.
