Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Ingenious and simple to operate, Tilia's FoodSaver system seals foodinside containers after vacuuming out air--and the oxygen that causes foods to spoil. That means food stays fresh longer than when it's merely refrigerated or frozen. Meat, for example, remains good in the freezer for about six months; frozen inside a vacuum package, it remains good for two to three years--and it doesn't suffer freezer burn, either. Fish, coffee, cheese, crackers, sugar, nuts, oils, and wine all stay fresh three to five times longer when stored in a vacuum, whether they're frozen, refrigerated, or at room temperature. Also, silverware and other metal items won't tarnish when stored in a vacuum-sealed bag.

Like all FoodSaver machines, this one vacuums air from containers and seals bags with a simple one-touch operation. It has a manual sealing button for partial air removal and a sealing-time adjustment switch. The machine measures 15 by 5-1/2 by 4 inches, weighs 5 pounds, has a cord-storage compartment, and cleans easily with a damp, soapy cloth. It carries a one-year warranty against defects.

The basic FoodSaver container is Tilia's three-layer VacLoc bag: it has two plastic layers and an outer nylon layer to keep moist foods (such as meat loaf or chocolate cake) moist, dry foods (such as brown sugar or flour) dry, and all foods from leaking odor. Included in this kit is one 11- by 10-inch roll for bagging, three quart size bags, and two gallon bags. For cooking, the bags can go directly into a microwave oven or boiling water. They're resealable, reusable, and dishwasher-safe. --Fred Brack

5.0 out of 5 stars An Indispensable appliance for the kitchen!, July 17, 2002

The FoodSaver Vac1050 is my second vacuum sealer unit from Tilia. An earlier model just wore out from constant use. The unit works flawlessly and will pay for itself many times over. My freezer is full of foods bought in bulk and separated in vac bags for individual meals. I especially love the ability to seal foods in canning jars. Coffee, brown sugar, rice and flour are just a few of the dry items that will retain their freshness in these containers. I like to make large meals such as lasagne and stuffed shells, divide them into individual servings and freeze the portions in the resealable bags for lunches. And the bags are reusable even when used to store poultry. A little dish soap mixed with a few drops of bleach will kill any bacteria that may have formed. One suggestion on bags: Cut the bags much larger than you need. In this way, you can reuse them many times and just throw away the part that you have cut away when you open the bag.

This is an absolute 'must have' for a family. You can purchase food in bulk and never have to worry about spoilage or freezer burn. It will be one of your most used kitchen appliances and you will wonder how you ever got along without it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Product!, August 21, 2001

This is one of those pleasant times that you find that the hype meets expectation! Here in Oregon, fishing and hunting are dominant activities and making the most of one's bounty is critical. I shopped on-line with all of the major stores for this midrange model and Amazon provided the best price and free shipping! The shopping experience was excellent! This device extends the freshness of your catch, whether you wish to eat fresh, smoke your game, or freeze it. I use it hand-in-hand with canning, smoking, or otherwise preserving meat and it performs its duties flawlessly. It is much like this was designed especially for the fisherman! This particular model had the features that I was looking for such as a Vac Channel for moisture dispersal, an adjustable time switch on the sealer, and a Manual Seal button. The mason jar sealer works extremely well and is an efficient method of keeping foods fresher longer. I would recommend this particular model to anyone interested in long term, efficient, food storage, (without having to pay up to twice as much for the Professional Model).

4.0 out of 5 stars 1050 vs. other models, December 28, 2000

I just bought the 1050 model. The 300 model does not offer the hole for using the jar sealer(s). The 550 model does, but the 1050 model improves on the 550 by offering automatic operation (you press once and release as opposed to having to hold it down). Not having used one of these before, I appreciate not having to figure out how long or how hard I should press. (Each model upgrade also comes with slightly better accessories.)

I rated it 4 stars for ease of operation and for exactly matching what I saw on the infomercials (including the noise). I'm reserving the last star until I see if it actually makes the food last as long as they say.
