5.0 out of 5 stars An Indispensable appliance for the kitchen!
The FoodSaver Vac1050 is my second vacuum sealer unit from Tilia. An earlier model just wore out from constant use. The unit works flawlessly and will pay for itself many times over. My freezer is full of foods bought in bulk and separated in vac bags for individual meals. I especially love the ability to seal foods in canning jars. Coffee, brown sugar, rice and flour...

3.0 out of 5 stars They have to solve the liquid problem
This isn't a bad product. Just don't try to use the bags for sealing anything with liquids. The vac just sucks the fluid in and the heat sealer doesn't seal. And It's not only with lots of liquid. I tried to seal items like chicken breasts (that came out really juicy!) and the vac sucked the oils right out of the chicken breasts and the bad failed to seal. I hav found...

Coffee, brown sugar, rice and flour are just a few of the dry items that will retain their freshness in these containers. I like to make large meals such as lasagne and stuffed shells, divide them into individual servings and freeze the portions in the resealable bags for lunches. And the bags are reusable even when used to store poultry. A little dish soap mixed with a few drops of bleach will kill any bacteria that may have formed. One suggestion on bags: Cut the bags much larger than you need. In this way, you can reuse them many times and just throw away the part that you have cut away when you open the bag.

This is an absolute 'must have' for a family. You can purchase food in bulk and never have to worry about spoilage or freezer burn. It will be one of your most used kitchen appliances and you will wonder how you ever got along without it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Product!, August 21, 2001

This is one of those pleasant times that you find that the hype meets expectation! Here in Oregon, fishing and hunting are dominant activities and making the most of one's bounty is critical. I shopped on-line with all of the major stores for this midrange model and Amazon provided the best price and free shipping! The shopping experience was excellent! This device extends the freshness of your catch, whether you wish to eat fresh, smoke your game, or freeze it. I use it hand-in-hand with canning, smoking, or otherwise preserving meat and it performs its duties flawlessly. It is much like this was designed especially for the fisherman! This particular model had the features that I was looking for such as a Vac Channel for moisture dispersal, an adjustable time switch on the sealer, and a Manual Seal button. The mason jar sealer works extremely well and is an efficient method of keeping foods fresher longer. I would recommend this particular model to anyone interested in long term, efficient, food storage, (without having to pay up to twice as much for the Professional Model).

4.0 out of 5 stars 1050 vs. other models, December 28, 2000

I just bought the 1050 model. The 300 model does not offer the hole for using the jar sealer(s). The 550 model does, but the 1050 model improves on the 550 by offering automatic operation (you press once and release as opposed to having to hold it down). Not having used one of these before, I appreciate not having to figure out how long or how hard I should press. (Each model upgrade also comes with slightly better accessories.)

I rated it 4 stars for ease of operation and for exactly matching what I saw on the infomercials (including the noise). I'm reserving the last star until I see if it actually makes the food last as long as they say.

4.0 out of 5 stars great saving money item, August 6, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: FoodSaver Vac 1050 Vacuum-Sealing Kit, White (Kitchen)
I had a lower end foodsaver sealer for 7 seven years, till the heat sealer bar went. Bought this one and love it. Read the review from people in Denver who had problems with the alitutde there, I lived at 10,120 feet above sealevel and mine works great(St.Mary Glacier CO.) We used it to put meats up, like wild game, to seal potato chips bags, and lunch meats, and meals. Don't have a problem with liquids either, if you hold the bag below the sealer(like on the side of the countertop), and keep the liquids in the bottom of the bag, if seals fine. Also on not sealing, I notice my husband has problems, he usually doesn't seal the 1st side of bag right, and has a air hole, which allows air in. I double seal the 1st side. A great product, with so many uses. I use mine everyday, and can't see life without it

5.0 out of 5 stars FoodSaver Saves Well + Some Hot Tips, August 17, 2001

This is one of the handiest things in my pantry. It seals very well in both vacuum and non-vacuum modes. Hot Tips...1. Find a place where your sealer is instantly (or nearly so) ready to use. You'll keep finding more and more uses. I haven't used a twistie in weeks. 2. Don't bother freezing baked goods before freezing as the manufacturer suggests. With a minimum of practice, you'll learn to halt the vacuuming process at just the right time. 3. If you have to cook quickly during the week and own Corning cassaroles, freeze soupy things (chili, stews) in those new inexpensive plastic leftover dishes. Then pop out and seal (No problem with liquid getting in the vacuum part of the appliance.). When you want to use, the block fits perfectly in the cassarole and goes from there to your microwave or oven and thence to your table. 4. Keep non-food uses in mind. I'm patching and painting right now, and I intend to seal the leftover spackling paste (right in the container) when I'm finished. Crackfiller is one of those things you don't usually use up, but should you need some months later, it's all dried up. (No smart cracks!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Great product except the mason jar attachment., July 17, 2003
This review is from: FoodSaver Vac 1050 Vacuum-Sealing Kit, White (Kitchen)
This thing is wonderful and I use it everyday. If you get the mason jar attachment though, it doesn't hold in the fridge. When things get cold, the seal fails. The mason jars seal fine for storage of dry goods but won't work in the fridge. The canisters seems to work well everywhere, however. Overall, I love it.

While I do not have this exact model, my Tilia vac system does what it says it does. I've had mine for about a year now and, yes, food really does stay fresher for much longer. For example, I buy large jars of sliced jalapeño peppers for use on nachos even though it takes time to get through the entire jar. The liquid always became cloudy and the pepper slices soft when I used the regular lid. Replacing the lid with the 5-inch jar cover has kept the liquid clear and the peppers fresh.

I'm currently experimenting with something in the video - preparing lettuce for salads and placing it in one of the big cannisters and the salad "fixings" that thrive in moisture in a smaller one. Supposedly, the vegetables will stay fresh for a week, allowing me to have a quick salad after work instead of skipping it because it's too much effort.

I use the bags with food that can handle being crushed (meat, coffee beans, some cheeses, etc.), but if it's soft or particularly juicy, the bags can be a problem. The best way to learn when to use them is to experiment. The bags are easy to wash in the dishwasher (I turn them inside-out), though for some reason they discolor. I've found the bags at Wal-Mart and K-Mart, so they are available if you need them immediately. The cannisters are easier to get through Amazon than through the Tilia website. They have other goodies that Amazon doesn't carry, but they aren't very good at direct-sales. Have fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Tool, September 9, 2004
By
This review is from: FoodSaver Vac 1050 Vacuum-Sealing Kit, White (Kitchen)
Okay, so it's a bit expensive, but that's part of what makes it a good gadget. Seriously though, the bags are expensive so be prepared for that. I don't see this sealer as a replacement for your everyday things. If you use it like the commercials suggest, you'll be broke.

However, the true advantage is for those seasonal things: strawberries, fish, chiles, etc. My neighbor is an addicted fisherman and he brings in King Salmon every weekend during the season. With this sealer, he's able to store the fillets throughout the year until the next season arrives.

For those with limited time, it's also a plus. I don't have a lot of time during the week to make decent meals, so I make food in large batches after regular dinner. We break the food into useable portions and freeze them. Then I just pull a serving out of the freezer when needed. I can keep my Korean BBQ pork in a pouch ready for grilling anytime during the week.

As an earlier rater noted, be careful of the marinade feature. I vac the food until the liquid gets just to the top of the bag, stop the machine, then switch to "Seal only" to seal the bag. You won't get "vacuum packed" but you get something you can toss in the fridge to marinade for a few hours or overnight. It's much easier to turn and won't slosh on the fridge shelf.

If you're a closet chef or just like good food, this sealer is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best vacuum sealer I have ever owned, November 25, 2001

I have owned other vacuum sealers in the past but they do not come close to the convenience and versatility as the Food Saver by Tilia. The money I have saved by packaging my leftovers and bulk foods has more than doubled. I also cook up large quantities of meals and casseroles only to vacuum save them and put into freezer for later use. My whole family now uses this system and absolutely loves the quality of leftover meals that never got eaten before.. No more guessing on what was that at the back of the fridge for me.. Our boxed cereals lasts more than twice as long after being opened.. we just re seal the bags and keep them fresh. No more stale cereal at the bottom of the box.

4.0 out of 5 stars How did I live without this thing?, June 26, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: FoodSaver Vac 1050 Vacuum-Sealing Kit, White (Kitchen)
I have this item sitting on top of my Ronco Rotisserie (also from Amazon) and it is used every single day. It is a lifesaver when it comes to buying in bulk and it has paid for itself in potato chips that would normally have gone stale. I always wash out the bags and reuse them to save on buying new ones.

My only gripe is that it dies a couple weeks before the warranty ran out. It would not seal anything. I sent it in and it was returned within a couple of weeks completely fixed-no charge except postage one way.
