5.0 out of 5 stars Great Deal!
We LOVE our new V840 FoodSaver. We've had no problems with it and this model has all the features we need without the costly bells and whistles. The handheld appliance was something we really had no use for, but the package seemed like a great value anyway. And it is! The handheld appliance is the same unit as the black WineSaver that sells for $40-$50. We simply...

2.0 out of 5 stars Bum FoodSaver not up to par
I see why this one was a Friday Special; the appliance I received did not seal well. Additionally, the lid needed to be depressed with the enormous strength of TWO hands, so it was NOT "hands-free" as advertised. But worse, it sporadically sealed ONLY after about twenty attempts each time. I ruined food, bags and my temperament with this appliance, and was glad I didn't...

We simply wrapped it up along with a set of FoodSaver bottle stoppers and gave it to a wine-loving friend as a gift. What a deal!

Also, for your information, this kit comes with a hose, cannister, VHS instructional tape, and sample roll and bags. For the sake of economy, we use the bags we create over and over again by sanitizing them in the dishwasher. We're mindful of cutting generously portioned bags initially, and as the seals are cut from one use to the next, there's still plenty of opportunity to re-use the bags before they become too small to seal anything in.

Our family is very happy with this model and couldn't be more pleased with its performance.

I had the same problem the other user did...UNTIL I opened the lid of the unit and found there is a piece of cardboard in the bag cutter slot to keep the cutter from sliding around during shipping. It was keeping the lid from depressing. Nothing mentioned that! So I removed the cardboard and now it works great! I felt silly, but I'm sure relieved.

I miss some of the features of my Professional II (like the variable settings), but it finally died after years of hard work and I couldn't pass up the deal on this one.

It works well and meets my needs.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bum FoodSaver not up to par, January 10, 2006

This review is from: FoodSaver V840 Vacuum Sealing Kit with Bonus Handheld Appliance (Kitchen)
I see why this one was a Friday Special; the appliance I received did not seal well. Additionally, the lid needed to be depressed with the enormous strength of TWO hands, so it was NOT "hands-free" as advertised. But worse, it sporadically sealed ONLY after about twenty attempts each time. I ruined food, bags and my temperament with this appliance, and was glad I didn't already give away my excellent previous Food Saver. I phoned Customer Service who had me remove and replace the seal and I was finally able to seal a bag using much elbow grease. (Remember, I've been using a FoodSaver for about 5 years on a daily basis, so the system is not new to me.) The Rep didn't want to hear my suggestion that they not market this model as hands free since it requires two working hands. She suggested that I keep trying to get mine to work and added that when the vacuum sound theoretically would change after about 5 seconds of holding the lid in the closed position, it then would become hands free. Mine didn't ever. Using the seal only option required constant upper body pressure on the appliance for the light to turn on and the sealing strip sometimes warmed in an attempt to seal. The V840 was returned to Amazon after two days of my frustrating attempts at sealing and I then purchased the 2490 from Costco. This model is truly hands free and mine works like a charm. I'd recommend not skimping on your FoodSaver because once you start vacuuming and sealing, you won't want to be without. As I don't know if the V840 I received was par for that model, I cannot give it a favorable review.

I bought the food saver because I was throuwing away too much stuff and it is already beginning to pay for itself. The instructions claim that you push down to get it started and then release but I find that I have to keep pressure on it to get it to work but it is not that big of a deal. This package included a handheld unit that is the same as the winesaver, and so I have the bottle stoppers. It was the best price I found.

I already owned this product and this saves my alot of $$$$. This keeps all food fresh longer than it would last without. It's paid for itself many times over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works for me, July 13, 2006
This review is from: FoodSaver V840 Vacuum Sealing Kit with Bonus Handheld Appliance (Kitchen)
Though excited about receiving this product, I was also just a little bit paranoid that the machine would give me the difiiculties that several other reviews mentioned. Thus far, I have no complaints. I made certain to remove the cardboard strip protecting the bag cutter, and it takes very little pressure to cut a bag. When it comes to holding down the lid (pressing both sides), the FoodSaver operates exactly as the guide says- hold down evenly for a few seconds and the lid stays shut for sealing. I find that the extended seal works best for most foods- even "juicier" items- but have not tried beef yet. The lid does release after the sealing is completed.

Two things: 1)Fresh leafy herbs do not seem to freeze well (they defrosted limp)but may not have been completely dried, and 2)It is sometimes challenging to position the bag in the "drip tray" holders and get it to stay before closing the lid.

The bonus hand-held sealer is nice for the extra canister included. This product serves its purpose and I am happy with my purchase.
