Book Description

October 31, 2006

Here is the first anti–cancer diet and nutrition counter found together in one book – with a list of over 2000 foods, broken down by serving size and their cancer–fighting properties.

Each year, millions of people lose their lives to cancer. Yet recent studies have shown that by eating right, staying physically active, and maintaining a healthy weight, we can cut the risk of cancer by 30 to 40 per cent. The cancer–fighting vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals found in vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts and wholegrains work together to produce significant healing and protection against all kinds of cancer. But to make the right dietary adjustments, you need to know which foods contain which cancer–fighting nutrients – information that until now hasn't been easy to find in one easy–to–use reference.

Foods That Combat Cancer is the first book introducing a cancer–fighting diet, providing food names and recipes, and listing over 2000 brand name and basic food items, with the anti–cancer nutrients found in each one, based on serving size. From vegetables to snacks, you'll discover not only what foods are best for an anti–cancer diet, but how much you should be eating everyday.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, January 31, 2011

I actually bought this book from CVS and am ordering another copy from Amazon for my sister. I don't agree with the first commentor about the charts. Yes, half the book IS charts, but this author does an EXCELLENT job of providing and categorizing her info. I was diagnosed with breast cancer December 28, 2010 after I found a lump on December 14, 2010. I have triple negative breast cancer which is the most difficult to treat. Those charts are vital to someone like me. I am currently going through sickening chemo and I tell you, I will take the time to look through all those charts and use the recipes she provides. Based on what I've read in many places high fat diets may cause this type of cancer I have.

This author does something none of the others that I have read does: she actually lists the types of foods that prevent WHAT TYPE OF CANCER. Many books and others will tell you that all you have to do is eat veggies and it will fight cancer. Certain veggies and fruits are needed for certain types of cancer. She even tells you how to pick out your fruits and veggies, how to cook them to spare nutrients, and how NOT to cook meat, how to cut veggies and fruits to spare nutrients, how to freeze them.

Many people also tout a "low fat diet," but what exactly does that mean? I could cut back my fat and HOPE that I'm doing the right thing, but I want to get it right this time. The author just flat out states that you shouldn't eat anymore than 10 grams of saturated fat and no transfat. I bet a lot of people don't realize that. Now I do. I really love this book and definitely recommend it.I read a lot of stuff about cancer since my diagnosis and this is one of the best.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lots of charts and stuff, December 16, 2008

The book started off great. Easy to read and many helpful tips, but then suddenly more than half the book turns out to be charts and values for specific types of foods. Who has the time to sit and study these charts when you're hungry or in a hurry. It was like a waste of paper. Maybe a doctor or nutritionist could use this stuff, I don't know if the average Joe cares for pages and pages and pages of "Serving Size, Calories, Fat/Gram, Fiber etc.
It's just too much stuff. The first 74 pages are good though.
