5.0 out of 5 stars What a great book
This book is a Godsend to anyone who wants to eat good food that is healthy and tastes good. 3.0 out of 5 stars 101 Foods that could save your life
This book is packed with great information. The problem is that it is the size of a paperback book. It is hard to read because of its size. Wish it came in a bigger format with larger print.

This book is a Godsend to anyone who wants to eat good food that is healthy and tastes good. I had the priviledge of having Dave Grotto as a nutritionist during chemotherapy and radiation for breast cancer. He came to my home and went through all my cabinets to show me all the items that were 'bad' or 'good', then tagged them with stickers, so I wouldnt forget. Then he took me grocery shopping to show me all the great foods that are great tasting and also very healthy. So many foods we dont realize are right in front of us that we dont try!! He taught me how to read labels, not just by fat and carbs, but the ingredient contents, and explained how to make them. It was fun and educational. I am happy to say that one year after my last treatment, my last check up was wonderful, no signs of cancer!!!! Coinsedence or fact, that foods play a big part in your health? Probably both, but I am not giving up on all the advice that Dave gave me. Im feeling wonderful. Everything he told me in person, is also in his book. I take it shopping me all the time, and refer to it quite often. Buy the book!!! You WILL NOT regret it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars On the MUST READ list for 2008 & beyond, January 13, 2008
By
This review is from: 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life (Paperback)
Wow - this is really an amazing book. So easy to read - so chock full of fun facts, history and information on some great great foods. I am a "cookbook junkie" and I must say, the majority of the recipes in this book are ones I would (and have started to) make on a regular basis. But more importantly, recipes I would share with friends who aren't as "into" cooking as I am. They are easy to make and unbelievably good for you!

Thanks to the author for finally writing a healthy living / informative / cookbook / eating guidebook - that everyone who buys food for their family and friends can live by and use for years to come. My grocery shopping --- especially for grains, fruits and vegetables -- has completely changed and my husband and 3 kids are ecstatic with the food I now keep stocked in my house.

This will be my hostess gift, relative birthday gift and "go-to" gift for a long time... Thanks!

5.0 out of 5 stars 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life, January 27, 2008
This review is from: 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life (Paperback)
What makes this book unique is its easy to read, friendly format. Tired moms, who want to read but have limited time, will find it so refreshing to be able to start and finish on any one page! I love how it appeals to both the scientific and romantic side of food, with its hard facts and historical folk lore. I recommended it to my nutrition intern and she replied with, "I just started reading 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life. I'm sooooooo excited about this book! It's so original in its approach and I love that it's not some quick fix fad diet. I already emailed all my girlfriends about it." The recipes are super too!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great how-to, not a how-not-to, January 19, 2008
This review is from: 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life (Paperback)
What a fun book! I highly recommend it to anyone who likes to eat and cares about health. Finally a book that tells us what to eat instead of giving us the dreaded list of bad-for-you foods. David Grotto gives us the why, how and a whole lot more. Who knew that figs had more fiber than any other fresh or dried fruit and that they contain digestive enzymes? He gives us a recipe, the health benefits and some history - fun, tasty and interesting - 101 times! You'll never get in a food rut if you use this book to choose one new food each week. As a registered dietitian, I want all my patients to have this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Written, Packed With Information, January 8, 2008
This review is from: 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life (Paperback)
This is a well-written book. The format makes it easy to pick up and find specific information, or to read continuously. I actually did both. I started by looking up information about the health benefits of cinnamon, and ended up reading through several more foods.

The "teaser" facts presented are interesting and draw you in to learn a little more about each food. The consistent format for each food makes it easy to jump from one to another to learn what you want to know quickly.

It's also great to have a book that doesn't spend time telling you what not to eat, but telling you what *to* eat. It makes embarking on a healthy eating plan less daunting when you have a ready made shopping list rather than just a confusing exclusion list, and makes it a more positive experience.

What I especially like is that you don't just get a list of foods, but specific instructions about what to do with them, how to select them, how to store them and recipes to prepare them.

I wish the texts for the biology classes I teach were written with such clarity and conciseness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for family feeding, healing and growing, February 19, 2008

Everyone in my family has gotten or is getting a copy of this book!

At first, I used Dave's book to expand my family's diet/palate (how much chicken and broccoli can you eat?). Now, my three-year-old regularly begs me for acai berry juice, kiwi and other things you wouldn't expect toddlers to like. Our daughter's tastes, at 17 months, seem to vary according to her mood, but it's good to know that we're introducing her to a wide range of delicious foods with equally wide-ranging health benefits.

Moms with limited time, take note: the recipes, in addition to being incredibly innovative (e.g. tequila shrimp, guava and cheese empanadas), are straightforward, tasty, and won't trash your kitchen. If your kids are old enough, they're also easy enough to serve as basic cooking lessons. No better way to teach kids to appreciate food!

The biggest surprise is that I find myself turning to Dave's book as a medical reference. Not for broken legs or anything, but for colds and other common illnesses, it's useful, comforting (and effective!) to turn to healing foods in addition to - or instead of - medicines that just block symptoms instead of relieving them.

After a month of use, my book's pages are crusted and filthy - what better endorsement for a food book?

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! A book that tells it all!, January 23, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life (Paperback)
101 Foods That Could Save Your Life is definitely a book for those to add to their collection who are interested in food, health, cooking and/or good reading. Grotto makes this book a delight to read by making it an easy to follow food by food guide to what you should eat and why you should eat it. I also explores basic histories and the who, what, why and where of eat food along with delicious recipes to follow.

The best things about this book are that it isn't a diet. It doesn't tell you what not to eat, it tells you the about the healthiest foods out their that will benefit your body and why. Once your done, it becomes a great cookbook and reference book again and again!

Try the swiss chard tacos. They are delish! Who would of thought to put chard in tacos. The blackberry crisp is to die for! I made it for brunch for a party and it was the first dish to go.

Trust me, as a fellow foodie and one concern with their health and longevity. Buy this book and give it as a gift. You won't be sorry!
