The Best Protein,
By
This review is from: Now Foods WHEY PROTEIN (Health and Beauty)
I'm a personal trainer, nutritionist, and former bodybuilder. The pure unflavored whey protein isolate is definitely the best protein powder you can find. There are many health benefits to using whey protein, but with all of the artificial sweeteners and additives in most powders, those health benefits are ruined. Insulin sensitivity is a major factor when it comes to burning fat and building muscle. Lack of insulin sensitivity is the reason for sugar cravings and getting the shakes when you don't have your Coke or Pepsi everyday. Whey protein is proven to improve insulin sensitivity more than any other protein source, but common additives like Acesulfame and Aspartame cause insulin secretion much like sugar, and that diminishes the whey's ability to increase insulin sensitivity. The key to burning fat 24 hours a day is to keep your insulin in a low to moderate range, and avoiding spikes.
As for guys trying to build big muscles, insulin and growth hormone are very important for building muscle, but when one increases the other decreases. That's why professional bodybuilders use both insulin and HGH at the same so they can get the best of both worlds. Unless you want to pay $2,000 a month for prescription HGH and insulin, your best bet is to keep your insulin in a low to moderate range so you can gradually build solid permanent muscle while gradually lowering your body fat at the same time. Having a high carbohydrate protein shake immediately after your workouts do help build muscle by filling your muscles with glucose, and that's fine if you're going for the modern Ronnie Coleman look. The low sugar/insulin diet is best if you're going for the lean old school Scharzenegger look. Believe me, women definitely prefer the lean old school bodybuilder look over the bloated pot belly gorilla look of the modern bodybuilder. So my recommendation for a good protein shake for not only weight loss, but fat loss, and muscle gain; is a scoop of pure whey isolate, a little xylitol, and some plain natural cocoa. The whey kills your appetite and keeps your insulin low, the cocoa is a strong antioxidant and increases serotonin to fight hunger and boost your mood, and the xylitol makes it sweet without causing any insulin secretion in your body. It isn't the greatest tasting shake in the world, but it's still pretty good and it makes losing fat much easier. Having that shake with a small meal a few times a day is an easy way to put your body into a positive nitrogen balance, which means your body is burning fat and building muscle.

THE Perfect Protein,

1) PURITY: It has one ingredient, whey protein isolate. May the perfectionist in you rejoice!
2) SOLUBILITY: It dissolves super easy. A 3-second whiz in the blender is enough, or about 30 seconds of stirring. 3) DRINKABILITY: It lends absolutely NO texture to whatever liquid you add it to. If you mix it with water, the finished product retains the viscosity of water! I was shocked at it's textural neutrality, unlike soy isolate, which has a chalky mouth-feel, (yuck!) 4) VERSATILITY: It's 99% tasteless. (Somewhat like if you put a teaspoon of skim milk in a glass of water, lol) You can add it to almost ANYTHING! (EXCEPT HOT LIQUIDS, THE PRODUCT WILL IRREVERSIBLY CURDLE! As a side note, acid does NOT curdle the protein. I've even added it to straight lemon juice without curds forming. But whey flavored lemonade isn't my cup of tea.) 5) MESS-RESISTANT: It's not a super-fine powder like corn starch or soy isolate, but more the texture of pancake mix, if you catch my drift; you won't make a dusty mess! 6) ECONOMY: At $2.00 (or more) for a dozen egg whites (~50g protein therein) you're paying 4 cents per gram of that egg protein. The 10lb bag of whey isolate gives you ~4050g of protein for (after shipping) $86.00, or 2.1 cents per gram of protein! Half the price of egg whites! I love you, NOW FOODS!

Great Protein Source for Weight Loss Surgery Patients or Lactose Intolerant,
By

This review is from: Now Foods Whey Protein, Isolate Pure, 10-Pound (Health and Beauty)
I was a bit skeptical about using this to supplement my protein needs. It mixes easily in a blender, and you really can mix it with nearly everything. I use it to thicken up soups, in smoothies, and I sprinkle some in oatmeal and cold cereals.
Because I need at least 100 grams of protein each day, I find it hard to do that without driving up my fat, cholesterol, and caloric intake. I began using whey protein several years ago, but my lactose intolerance has also gotten considerably more sensitive. Using this product 2-3 times each day has helped me to maintain my protein needs without ANY of the usual side affects from whey protein (without isolate). The price is more than reasonable, and nearly 30 grams protein per serving makes this the perfect protein supplement for people like me.

This item is all of what people are saying except easy mixing. Im not sure why people are saying that this mixes easily, or doesn't clump. It has a very weak flavor (unflavored) and takes on the flavor of whatever it is mixed with. I use a morning shake of this powder, juice and dextrose. I use a little water, a scoop of protien and pour the juice over it to aid that like a pre mix. If you use a shaker cup and shake vigorously it will get a weak foam that wont go away (in water or milk or juice) so i just roll the cup end over end to make the mixture strain through the shaker cup's screen, no foam. I also mix this about 5 minutes before I intend to drink it to disolve some of the clumps.
When your done, make sure the shaker cup is scrubbed clean. If you dont scrub it every time, this stuff sticks like fur on even the shiniest slickest surfaces. If you neglect to scrub, you will see the residue if you pour in some juice and swirl it. The dish washer wont do it. If you get any powder on your hand you will realize just how stick this stuff is. Other than that, this goes well in oatmeal, cereal, I have put it on waffles and even in a cream soup without a big change in the texture or taste. This has no whey concentrates (mostly junk)and these 100% Mf wpi are naturally high in BCCA's and Glutamine. It covers several suppliment needs in one or two scoops.

My husband adds this to his morning homemade frappuccinos ([...]) and it dissolves easily... and then gives a nice protein boost for the morning. :)
We have tried mixing this whey protein powder into warm/hot liquid and it clumped and didn't work well, so I recommend adding it to cold or room temp. things but not hot liquids!

When you are working out hard and striving for results, small things like
taste are trivial. This is the best, pure protein. Just down the milky bland drink and you are good. No need for sugar or fake sugar or flavorings, or dyes. Just protein.

I've been using other brands of whey protein for a few years now, but I was interested in trying this brand based on the formula of the product - it is pretty much exactly what I was looking for, and it had great reviews. I'm going to say though, that I am quite disappointed with the product.
Based on the other reviews, I am thinking I somehow got a bad batch or something. First of all, this stuff tastes absolutely awful! It is supposedly unflavored, which is what I wanted so I could mix it with fruit smoothies, and oatmeal and the like. But even a half of scoop put in with a full blender of fruit and yogurt, makes the whole thing taste like rotten milk. It really triggers my gag reflex sometimes too. Second of all, it doesn't mix well at all. Usually for post-work out I just mix a scoop of powder with like 12 ounces of water or juice, but I can't even do that with this one because it is REALLY clumpy, and it smells and tastes so horrible. PROS: - Great formula / health content - Reasonable cost CONS: - Smells really bad - Tastes TERRIBLE! - Very bad mixability (super clumpy) I might try buying another small batch of this to find out if my first purchase just came from a bad batch, because I really want to like it based on the nutrition facts.

I will summarize by saying that all the rave reviews on Amazon were spot on in regards to this product: Tastes great with anything including water, is highly soluble, contains almost no carbs and is of course a great value. One thing, however, that alot of folks are leaving out of their rave reviews is that this whey protein isolate powder is low in cholesterol (only 4mg per serving) because it is pure protein and thus does not contain additives. Usually non isolate whey powders can have up to 60mg of cholesterol per serving which can add up to unhealthy daily amounts of cholesterol, depending on your intake. With Now Foods' Whey isolate, you are simply getting your protein with a small fraction of the cholesterol compared to other protein powders. Just thought I'd put that out there. Enjoyable and healthy - you can't ask for a better combo.
