But how will she ever get a  chance when everyone thinks she's a lazy and foolish girl?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4?In this beginning chapter book, Greta Muller, youngest of three daughters of German immigrants and considered a fool by her family, lives in Galveston, Texas, in 1855. Her widowed mother runs a millinery shop, which she feels is beneath her. When Frau Dimpel, a rich, elderly woman, comes to the shop seeking a young companion, it seems like the perfect opportunity to improve their lot. The story is completely predictable and the "nobody listens to me" theme is excessive. Needless to say, Gretel gets the job because she is a hard worker and sympathetic. Diamond's fine black-and-white illustrations deserve a stronger story.?Charlyn Lyons, Broome County Library, Binghamton, NY
