A Simple But Effective Short Hard Boiled Crime Story,
By
This review is from: Foolproof (Hardcover)
Published back in 1981, this short, novella length tale is still very entertaining today. The references to an older time of share trading being a mystery to non brokers in the days before the internet, staff still getting paid in cash and the only way to make a call that won't show up on your telephone bill is to ring one payphone from another, and the carefree nature of sunbaking without worrying about skin cancer, all add to the enjoyment of this tale of trying to pull of the perfect high paying crime.
Basic plot revolves around, Charlie Hurst, a London underworld tough guy who after watching a documentary where younger lions killed the alpha male for the top spot knows his rein at the top will be challenged in the years ahead as he ages. Luckily for him a mysterious rich share trader has a scheme that will make them both rich. He needs Charlie to pull of house robberies and capture insider information documents on film. Using that information they'll both be rich with their gains in trading these shares. However as fans of this genre with authors like Richard Stark, James Pattinson and others know, there's always hurdles to pulling off a good plan. In Foolproof, those are an upherself cheating wife, who doesn't like not being informed of her husband's plans as well as underlings in the underworld who if they find out their boss is lowering himself to simple burglaries will know he doesn't have it anymore and is up for a deadly challenge of leadership.
