Book Description

March 4, 2009
Aliens, ancient gods, beautiful Valkyries, old-fashioned heroes, conniving nobles, betrayal, greed, incest, a magical gold horde; this story has something for everyone. Fafner, the most notorious criminal in the universe, is stranded on Earth after civilization has been ravaged by disease, war and pollution. He decides to hone his felonious skills by stealing the powerful artifacts developed by another alien, Alberich. But Alberich is determined to regain the artifacts or at least make Fafner pay for stealing them. Alberich's devices, made for the magical Rhinegold, give the user vast powers. The Chip, allows the user to receive information instantaneously from anywhere in the universe. The second device, called the Helm is a beanie-like hat that allows the wearer to see the life lines of every creature in the vicinity. Wotan, god of the Saxons and Vikings, has to recover the Rhinegold in order to prevent his aging. He recognizes the greatly enhanced power of the golden horde, thanks to Alberich's genius. He plans to make a big comeback and regain millions of worshippers. To take the devices away from Fafner, he needs an old-fashioned hero: one who is strong of arm and weak of brain. While these conflicts rage on, Brunnhilde, an ex-Valkyrie, searches for the meaning of true love. Despite a few false starts and some problems such as the wrath of the god Wotan and mean-spirited men, Brunnhilde struggles to understand mortal love while she seeks a good man to try it out on.

More About the Author

Award-winning author Hank Quense lives in Bergenfield, NJ with his wife Pat. They have two daughters and five grandchildren. He writes humorous fantasy and scifi stories. On occasion, he also writes an article on fiction writing or book marketing but says that writing nonfiction is like work while writing fiction is fun. A member of the Science Fiction Writers of America, he refuses to write serious genre fiction saying there is enough of that on the front page of any daily newspaper and on the evening TV news.
Zaftan Entrepreneurs is the first book of a trilogy. In it, an alien mining ship discovers a planet that holds promise to be a mining bonanza. Unfortunately, it is inhabited by humans, dwarfs, elves and other races and they object to the mining expeditions.
Zaftan Miscreants is the second book in the trilogy. It is awash with unusual characters and filled with bizarre plots
Hank's previous works include Tales From Gundarland, a collection of fantasy stories. Readers Favorite awarded the book a medal and EPIC designated it a finalist in its 2011 competition. His Fool's Gold is a retelling of the ancient Rhinegold myth and Tunnel Vision is a collection of twenty previously published short stories. Build a Better Story is a book of advice for fiction writers.
Altogether, Hank has over forty published short stories and a number of non-fiction articles.
He is presently working on novel that combines the plots and characters from Shakespeare's Hamlet and Othello with the character Falstaff thrown in for good measure. The working title is Falstaff's Big Gamble

5.0 out of 5 stars Hank Quense gives us another thriller!, March 24, 2010
This review is from: Fool's Gold (Paperback)
Fools Gold by Hank Quense is another terrific story written by an incredibly talented and FUN writer. Hanks characters and twists on tales we've heard before takes us down the unbeaten path into the hilariously crazy workings of his mind. And it's a twisted one at that!

His characters, their names, the places they come from and their way of thinking can only come from the mind of someone who thinks way outside of the box, way outside of this universe! This story, that begins as somewhat familiar if you're a sci-fi fan, quickly makes some serious turns and suddenly you find that it's nothing like what you were expecting.

I've had the opportunity to talk with Hank Quense on Page Readers about Fools Gold and his collection of short stories "Tunnel Vision" - the first story being "Sponsored By", should be made into a movie. That entire collection would make a great movie done as "shorts" put together, just like the book.

Keep them coming Hank!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Odd but wonderful book!, June 12, 2009
This review is from: Fool's Gold (Paperback)
When I first started reading Fool's Gold I was scared when learning it was based on a Fantasy story, as often times I'm not a big fan of Fantasy stories unless there is something unique about them. Fool's Gold changed into a basis for Science Fiction to run ramped. There are so many of the characters you can fall in love with and enjoy. Not to only mention the characters such as Fafner who has "criminal talents," but also the flowing of the backgrounds the characters live in. I was thrilled when I could imagine all these characters in one of my favorite settings, Science Fiction.

The story does jump around from time to time. However, that doesn't distract you from the robust characters, or the amazing background they play in. Quense makes sure the reader knows what comes next through such descriptive writing. I felt like I was reading one of my old time Science Fiction paperbacks, holding it until I was done. The pages will leave you wanting more. And reading this is what I suggest you do. You will fall madly in love with these characters, jump into their world, understand it and not want to put this book down; forgetting you have a book in your hand and imagining you are part of Quense's world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Would Wagner have died laughing?, April 20, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Fool's Gold (Paperback)

Who but that master of satire, Hank Quense, would even think of turning Wagner's Ring opera into a comical space opera? Well, actually it all takes place on our planet, but some of the main characters are aliens.

The dragon, Fafner, is replaced by a slimy, squid-like master criminal, a native of Zaftan 31B, marooned on Earth. The two dwarves, Alberich and Mime, are also aliens, exiled to this planet. Alberich, a technical genius, has appropriated the Rhinegold to produce some magical devices.

Without the Rhinegold, Wotan and the other gods are losing their immortality. Naturally they want it back. Everyone's after the gold, including the humans and all the power-hungry aliens. Wotan's complicated schemes to reclaim the gold are stymied by his interfering wife. It's a continuous comedy of errors as each faction seeks power and all are working at cross-purposes. Through it all, Brunnhilde keeps up her personal quest for true love.

What delicious fun!
