5.0 out of 5 stars New best author...
What a great start for this wonderful author. I enjoy romantic novels, however, most of them are too perfect and everything just is so fantasized.

Well in this story about a woman having a crush on a man for over 15 years and stalking him for that long, but later finding that she doesnt really love him is clever.

What i like about this author...

1.0 out of 5 stars Long, Predictable, and Kind of Pathetic
The book is told in a 1st person narrative by a person that I just couldn't like. At 30, she still acts like an immature high school with no self esteem. After a few hundred pages of her mooning over the HS Golden Boy, she suddenly changes her mind and decides that she's madly in love with someone else. I'm not sure why it's called fools RUSH in. The book was really...

What a great start for this wonderful author. I enjoy romantic novels, however, most of them are too perfect and everything just is so fantasized.

Well in this story about a woman having a crush on a man for over 15 years and stalking him for that long, but later finding that she doesnt really love him is clever.

What i like about this author and about this, her first book, is the fact that the first person character is written wonderfully. You really get to be in Millie Barnes' shoes. Also, the dialogue that she uses is so common and easy to understand. Higgins definitely writes her novels in language that everyone can relate to.

The fact that the main female character falls in love with her ex brother in law is a little weird, but pulls it off wonderfully nonetheless. Sam (Millie's ex brother in law) is portrayed as the best man in the world. He truly is a prince charming.

I definitely recommend this book if you like romantic novels and want a fresh twist to the regulars on Harlequin or the like. Can't wait for her next one..

4.0 out of 5 stars Charming and funny romantic comedy, March 17, 2007
By
This review is from: Fools Rush In (Mass Market Paperback)
Since her freshman year in high school, Millie Barnes has been head over heels for Joe Carpenter. A brainy and plain gal, she was all but ignored by Joe, in an adolescence that was filled with angst, unwanted baby fat, and acne. After stalking him for over a decade to find out his likes and dislikes, she's about to return to Cape Cod, and has a plan for landing her man. Coinciding with her return is the divorce of her older sister, who has relocated to New Jersey with her new man, so she consoles her former brother-in-law Sam and his son with meals and tries to set Sam up with her divorced friend.

Armed with a new body, new job as a physician at the local clinic, new wardrobe, and a funky new hairstyle, Millie does in fact snare her man. But is this Joe the same Joe she's idolized most of her life? As the two begin a relationship, Millie realizes something is missing. Will she follow her heart and attempt a chance withthe man she truly loves?

Higgins first novel is a sweet and romantic comedy told from the protagonist's point of view, which makes for some funny anecdotes and reactions. The sibling rivalry between Millie and the seemingly perfect older sister Trish is poignant (though Trish is a hard character to like). And the interactions between father and daughter ring so authentic, that I envisioned my own late father while reading the story. This one is a gem and not to be missed.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a tremendous book, December 12, 2006

Millie Barnes is about to get everything she ever dreamed of -- or is she? Sometimes what we think we want is not the best thing we could actually get.

As others before have mentioned, I'll be buying anything this author writes. She has the gift of being able to put her reader in her heroine's shoes, to root for that heroine, and write a book that's impossible to put down. I loved it!

As a librarian, I read a wide range of genres for the sake of reader's advisory. However, when I picked up Kristan Higgins' book from the new titles, I thought it would just be another typical "chic lit." Was I ever in for a surprise! While in bed with the flu, Fools Rush In brought me out of my self-imposed depths of misery with boughts of laughter from the great dialog, developed characters and all around great storyline.

Kudos to Kristan for an outstanding debut novel and I look forward to many more (even though I don't really read romance :) ).

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book about finding love where you doesn't expect to, September 13, 2008
This review is from: Fools Rush In (Mass Market Paperback)
Kristan Higgins is a author I just recently discovered. I just finished "Fools rush in" by her and absolutly loved it. Higgins manages to make scenarios I normally not enjoy into something beautifull and I can only recommend this book and her other work.
Our heroine is Millie Burnes, the intelligent sister, who is back in her hometown after going away to study medicine. Ever since highschool she dreamed about getting together with Joe Carpenter and now she is back to achieve her dream. She thinks that she knows everything about him (hey, she kind of stalked him more often than not) and that Joe is her perfect match.
So Millie is a girl who likes plans and after managing to make the most out of herself (for the first time she really enjoys how she looks like) she is finally ready to get her guy. And oh boy, does she gets him only to realize after some time that a fantasy is just that: a fantasy that has sometimes nothing to do with reality.
So after breaking up with Joe she realizes that she is in love with somebody totally different: her sisters ex-husband Sam. That's when the trouble really starts because Millie and Sam (of course he has feelings too) find themselves in a weird situation where they have to defend their feelings to their family and they have to decide if their love is worth all the turmoil.
This book is so good, Millie is great and inspiring and she has a bunch of people who care about her, I especially like her gay friends who help her making the most out of herself but also staying true to who she really is.
So, if you haven't already read this beautiful and inspiring book get yourself a copy and realize that love sometimes takes the long way and not the shortcut.
Enjoy.
S.M.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Can't Miss This One!, September 29, 2007
This review is from: Fools Rush In (Mass Market Paperback)
Every woman should read this book! When I bought it and saw that it was the authors debut I figured it would just be another quick read for me and be forgotten within a couple of weeks. Far from it. This is a story that every woman can relate to, if not in the story line then in the emotions. So many times while reading this book I would think, "I've felt that or thought that but just wouldn't say it out loud." It's written in the first person so that you get involved with the character (Millie) to the point that you feel like her acomplishments are also your own. Even though it's a very realistic book you're laughing all the way through. I guess we never realize how funny our crazy thoughts are until heard from an outside point of view. I would recomend this book to anyone, what ever your reading preferences. You won't regret it and you'll leave it with a smile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fabulous, December 10, 2006

This was one of the best romances I've read lately. It's funny and smart, with a heroine you have to love. I would buy this and anything else she writes.

The book was really long, and you could see the ending about 300 pages before it happened. I just couldn't bring myself to like Millie, and as much as I liked Sam, their relationship pushed to boundaries of normal for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars chick-lit marketed as romance (in a good way)!, February 12, 2011
This review is from: Fools Rush In (Mass Market Paperback)
I was must confess to reading this book under self-imposed duress. Although I'm a member of Romance Writer's of America, I don't read much romance and this book is published by Harlequin - the "it" publisher of romance. But my peers kept mentioning that Higgins wrote romantic comedy in a chick-lit voice and so I figured I'd give her a try. I'm so glad I did. This book wasn't romance in the way I thought it would be - corny, fabio-like hero, relying on sex scenes to up the drama, predictable etc. To me, it was "chick-lit". It was funny, contained witty dialogue, was told in the first person perspective of the female protagonist and had storylines outside of the love interest(s). And the ending literally gave me goose-bumps and got me choked up. I would have given 5 stars if it hadn't taken me awhile to get into it and if the ending wasn't quite so convenient. I will definitely read more of her books - anyone care to suggest which to read next?
