4.0 out of 5 stars A preliminary report on foolishness, December 3, 1998
By A Customer
Barbara Swain was really one of the pioneers on the study on the "laughter-culture" in the late Middle Ages abd the Renaissance. A study that has been continued by great scholars like J. Le Goff and M. Bakhtin, amongst others. In her book, she draws a close-up picture of some of the phenomena characterizing this period, like the Sociétés Joyeuses, the Abbeys of Misrule and the Feast of Fools. She blends this with an accurate reading of some of the manuscripts regarding the Fool as a person (as we know him from the shakespearian tradition). This book is a must for everybody that enjoyed Bakhtin's book on Rabelais and his time.
