Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

If there's such a thing as a destined-to-be-cult film, The Fist Foot Way is one. Self-aggrandizing tae kwon do instructor Fred Simmons (Danny McBride, Drillbit Taylor, Tropic Thunder) belittles his young and inexperienced students and snipes at his wife Suzie (Mary Jane Bostic). But when marital trouble strikes, Fred's sense of self capsizes and he starts acting out in wildly inappropriate ways. When a pilgrimage to meet his hero, sleazy martial arts champion Chuck "The Truck" Wallace (Ben Best), has terrible results, Fred must confront his demons--and, this being a comedy, his struggle is wildly unsuccessful. McBride is a white trash American version of Ricky Gervais (BBC's The Office); he's created a character whose excruciatingly bad behavior can't be dismissed because it's too real. Jeff Simmons is petty, tyrannical, insecure, delusional, lacking any sliver of dignity--i.e., human in all the worst ways. Many people will find The Foot Fist Way unendurable, but some members of the moviegoing public (and you'll know who you are the moment you see this movie) are going to find it painfully funny, so funny they'll have to turn away and cringe from recognition even as they succumb to fits of giggles. --Bret Fetzer

Product Description

3.0 out of 5 stars Nowhere near as good as Eastbound, November 30, 2009

This review is from: The Foot Fist Way (DVD)

Saw this with great hope after watching Eastbound and Down, but no cigar. Not even close. Too rude and mean in ways that EAD wisely sidesteps. McBride's character gets too nasty at points and becomes far too unlikeable for us to care about him after a while.

Plus there are long stretches without any real laughs, just major discomfort and squirmy moments. Those are nice as spice, but not as the main course.

And McBride's huge debt to Ricky Gervais' David Brent is all too obvious (as is the director's). The (original and by far the best) Office did that, and much better. FFW gets a little too mean and unfunny at various times as well.

I wouldn't recommend this. Just watch Eastbound again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Out of Control!!, October 2, 2008
By
Every now and then my wife and I like to grab the most random video at Blockbuster we can find and we hit the jackpot with this one! Danny McBride plays a Tae Kwon Do instructor going through somewhat of a midlife crisis. Sounds simple, but it was three times funnier than Napoleon Dynamite and all the no name actors were awesome! You will laugh literally every one to two minutes. I have systematically made everyone of my friends watch this.

2.0 out of 5 stars Trailer is better than the movie, January 6, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Foot Fist Way (DVD)
From the way the trailer set it out, it seemed that this was going to be an Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (Unrated Widescreen Edition)-style send up of a martial arts school. This movie falls flat on its face, and honestly the trailer is better than the movie, and a better use of your time.
