I am actually a die-hard football fan, and was trying to find a great way to teach my best friend football, who wanted to impress a potential love interest who was football-obsessed himself. Since it was the off-season, I wanted to find other ways to teach just besides footage. So I did a LOT of research of all the best learning football books out there. And I will tell you this: YOU NEED A BOOK. There is no website on the internet that is even close to being as detailed in effective as breaking down the game as this book is.

This book is way better than its competitor, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Football (2nd Edition). I think the author organizes the book is a more reader-friendly way, and just has a knack of explaining things better. In The Complete Idiot's Guide, things are a bit more confusing and it does not go into as much detail. Plus, the author of this book is awesome - Howie Long!

This book covers NFL, college football, and even some high school. It's pretty thorough. Not only does it talk about the basics of football and how each position is successfully played, it gives you a history of football and introduces you to some of the most famous players ever (great way to not look like a dummy!) You'll learn all about the different officials, how managers, coaches, and other important people play their role, college/youth/high school football, a chapter specifically dedicated to the NFL, fantasy leagues, the mental aspects of the game, and conditioning and dieting. The last two chapters are about the ten best players in history (according to Long) and the the best ten teams.

This is a great reference book for those of us who are trying to catch up in the world of football, or are football challenged. I grew up watching football. We're talking football on every single day during the season. My eyes would glaze over and I'd daydream about whatever wasn't football. I'd even go to games and still didn't really understand, nor care to. I married a man who was a football fanatic and was married to him for the worst 23 years of my life.

I came to HATE football, but then I met the man of my dreams who had absolutely zero interest in football. Then one day both of us read or saw something. I can't remember what it was. So we pulled out this book to try and figure out the answer and lo and behold, football seemed actually interesting! Next thing you know, I'm watching football every single time it's on. I've turned into my family, like my grandmother and my ex (who I'm sure would be furious to know I like it now, lol!).

I've seen a lot of reviews who don't like how it's organized. Let's face it, there is no easy way to organize football. That's what makes it complicated enough for you to want to even consider buying a book on the subject, right? Fortunately, it's in parts so you can pick up wherever you wish to. Each part is independent and you can flip back and forth if you need to.

Part I - Terminology, the field setup, uniforms, etc.
Part II - Offense
Part III - Defense
Part IV - Special teams, coaches, etc.
Part V - Fans, announcers, etc.
Part VI - Trivia like stuff
Part VII - Appendices like team lists, more terminology, etc.

This is a great book on how football works and even lists the differences between youth, high school and college football too.

Don't get me wrong... I love football. I bought this book because I want to know MORE about the game. Perhaps the reason I hated this book is because I bought it on my Kindle. Flipping around is difficult on a Kindle. If you read from page one on, you will see that Howie doesn't start from the basics, meaning the positions of the players. He explains the game referencing players positions. If you don't know the positions, it's impossible to follow. It's not that entertaining either. It's a bit dry. Don't waste your money. Try Football 101 if you want to start from the basics, it costs 99 cents. From there move up to this book but I must warn you, Dummies need to steer clear of this book.

Those of you who know me may wonder why, after spending so much time around the sport, why I woud ever read this book. Well, it's always good to be a Dummy. Football for Dummies is a fairly decent book - covering everything from what is the NFL to what is a 4-3 Under defense. It is probably a bit much for the complete novice to the game - especially the meaty portions of the Offense and Defense sections. However, someone with a rudimentary knowledge of the game, who may have watched a few on TV or in person, or a parent who has a kid just starting to play will find the content useful.

Even for someone around the game for the better part of 30 years, the book provided interesting insights from Howie Long on what plays are susceptable to a Cover 4 defense and some of the variations on the 4-3 front and their strengths and weaknesses. As with most Dummies books, the style is light and easy to digest, and you certainly will learn something.

So, it may have been a bit rudimentary for the experienced viewer, coach, player or fan, but it is a pretty useful book nevertheless.
