This is the analytical fan's dream book. Football analysis which views the events of the game in context, incorporating elements such as down and distance, field position, current score, game clock, and quality of opponent. Scouting and analytics are relied upon to dissect the game of football, team and player performances, and prospective performances.

One quickly learns to view the game in a more objective light. For instance, a team runs when it wins not wins when it runs. The NFL has through most of its history been a passing league, excepting the late sixties and seventies, where teams run once the lead has been established. A balanced offense leaning to the air attack is the standard approach. So the "establishing a good running game" mantra is truly a myth. The running era of the seventies was an aberration.

There are numerous precepts which are explained quite well which provide an enlightened clarity to viewing the game.

Team essays and projections are very informative. They provide players and developments to look for in the upcoming season based upon past performance, statistical trends, and scouting. The unique and detailed situational dependent stats are plentiful and intriguing.

There are interesting Sections devoted to each of the "skill positions": quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and tight ends.

This book is the "Baseball Prospectus" for NFL and college football fans. Plenty of factual information dissected beautifully with a touch of humor to boot.

Truly a must read for any fan. Learn quite a bit. Disagree at times. The process moves forward another year as we view the game with a broader and more analytical perspective. It's not dull Statistics 101. It's football becoming more alive with a wealth of information to make viewing more enjoyable.

An unbelievable resource. I don't know how they get all this information compiled and organized. If you can purchase one thing for this upcoming footbal season this is it. NFL, College, Fantasy. In depth statistics, scouting, commentary. It's a complete package. Just received this in the mail. Been reading it non-stop.

This book is one I buy every year when it turns late July or early August. It has 500 pages of great projections of NFL players, NFL teams and college teams. This is a must buy for any hardcore football fan.

The ultimate, information-packed, annual encyclopedia that's a must-have for anyone with a strong interest in the NFL.

Beyond the mass multitude of stats (an inexhaustible wealth of tables and factoids), there's so much great writing and sharp analysis here.

I tend to read the essays for all 32 teams, then sift through the player comments (all the skill players---QB, RB, WR, TE receive individual commentary) to read about all the more interesting players.

At last in Kindle format, thanks Football Outsiders. This is so much more useful to the football aficionado than the thousands of blogs where some random guy says "I love (place random team here), I have this gut feeling". Combine this with the brilliant analysis from Bill Barnwell on Grantland.com and you're set if you like football.

The essential guide for anyone who wants to know what actually happens on an NFL/NCAA field, instead of what coaches and players assume happens. A lot of the authors "never played the game", but study it a lot more carefully than guys who did play. If you want data instead of anecdotes, this is the guide for you.

This is an essential book to have when preparing to watch football on TV, or when you're getting ready for your fantasy league draft. The team essays are informative, interesting, and quite often humorous.

The most important book for people who don't write anon forum posts about how great their team is with fourteen 'z's. Only possible improvement is a forward by raiderjoe.
