Football Statistics With Context: Compelling & Fun
on August 9, 2014
This is the analytical fan's dream book. Football analysis which views the events of the game in context, incorporating elements such as down and distance, field position, current score, game clock, and quality of opponent. Scouting and analytics are relied upon to dissect the game of football, team and player performances, and prospective performances.
One quickly learns to view the game in a more objective light. For instance, a team runs when it wins not wins when it runs. The NFL has through most of its history been a passing league, excepting the late sixties and seventies, where teams run once the lead has been established. A balanced offense leaning to the air attack is the standard approach. So the "establishing a good running game" mantra is truly a myth. The running era of the seventies was an aberration.
There are numerous precepts which are explained quite well which provide an enlightened clarity to viewing the game.
Team essays and projections are very informative. They provide players and developments to look for in the upcoming season based upon past performance, statistical trends, and scouting. The unique and detailed situational dependent stats are plentiful and intriguing.
There are interesting Sections devoted to each of the "skill positions": quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and tight ends.
This book is the "Baseball Prospectus" for NFL and college football fans. Plenty of factual information dissected beautifully with a touch of humor to boot.
Truly a must read for any fan. Learn quite a bit. Disagree at times. The process moves forward another year as we view the game with a broader and more analytical perspective. It's not dull Statistics 101. It's football becoming more alive with a wealth of information to make viewing more enjoyable.
