Book Description

April 1, 2008
Best friends Harper Waddle, Sophie Bushell, and Kate Foster committed the ultimate suburban sin: bailing on college to pursue their dreams. Middlebury-bound Becca Winsberg was convinced her friends had gone insane until they reminded her she just might have a dream of her own.

Now the year is half-way through and their dreams seem within reach. Well, almost. Harper has managed to gain the freshman fifteen without ever being a freshman, though locked in her basement bathroom she finds inspiration and finally seems to be writing from the heart. Sophie is forced to leave her cushy Beverly Hills quarters and crashes on Sam's couch while looking for her big Hollywood break. Kate is doing aid work in Ethiopia, where she encounters family ghosts - along with Darby, the handsome but antagonistic Princeton student who thinks she's a dumb blonde who couldn't possibly care about Ethiopia "since there are no celebrities here." And when Becca finally emerges from her lovers' nest, it seems her relationship with Stuart isn't as perfect as she thought.

Even if "the year that changed everything" has sometimes been less than dreamy, these four best friends will always have each other.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 10 Up—The "Year of Dreams" continues for Harper, Kate, Becca, and Sophie, BFF. In Bass Ackwards and Belly Up (Little, Brown, 2006), Harper, because she did not get into NYU, told a little white lie—that she decided to take a year off before college to follow her dream to write a novel. Admiring her bravery, her best friends make a pact to follow their own aspirations—Becca wants to fall in love, Sophie wants to be an actress, and Kate dumps her acceptance to Harvard to find herself by backpacking through Europe. The story continues in this sequel as the girls persist in their efforts while pursuing romantic interests. The events are related through each protagonist's point of view, and the narrative is filled with the label-dropping shallowness of the day. There are sex scenes, strong language, and lots of cute boys. Settings such as a hip Denver coffee shop, Hollywood, and a private college in Vermont, with a humanitarian trip to Ethiopia thrown in, should entice plenty of eager readers, especially fans of the first book. While the story does move quickly and has a decent story line, it's not worthy of the A-list of chick lit.—Angela J. Reynolds, Annapolis Valley Regional Library, Bridgetown, NS, Canada

Review

'The girls maintain their unbreakable friendships, but the emphasis on theis novel becomes how each learns to survive on her own. As each young woman achieves her dream, she realizes that it was the journey rather than the finish line that changed her life.' - Kirkus --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars A satisfying sequel, July 18, 2008
By
This review is from: Footfree and Fancyloose (Hardcover)
I loved Bass Ackwards and Belly Up, which covers the first half of the Year of Dreams four friends pursue. I couldn't wait for the sequel - and it didn't disappoint! I read all 423 pages in a single day; I couldn't put it down. The romance in this book is even more complicated, painful and real than in the first. The girls all grow more mature and make deep personal discoveries. While the frequent explanations of the first book's events can be annoying, they do allow Footfree and Fancyloose to stand on its own; it is fully readable even if you haven't read the first book. This is a series I'll reread over and over; the characters are intensely interesting and their issues are totally relevant to college-age life.

I absolutely love this book and these charecters. It was a perfect sequal to an equally stellar book. If you haven't read the first book you definitly should. Both stories are great. I am crossing my fingers for another one(I want a happier resolution for two almost couples in the story) and I hope it comes sooner rather than later.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, September 7, 2008
This review is from: Footfree and Fancyloose (Hardcover)
To begin with this book was GREAT! And on another note i think its sad how little this book has been publicized. Its just as good as the sisterhood series (possibly better). This book is great for 14-adults. Not really too predictable and all together a great addition to the series!
