5.0 out of 5 stars Scared the 13 year-old pants off me!, July 20, 2006
...Of course, I'm now 31, but I have such fond memories of this book from my youth, that I searched it out at my local library. I couldn't remember the title, so with a few memories of specifics and a lot of help from my trusty librarian (God Bless 'em!) we located it. I wasn't disappointed in my reunion with this book.

Footsteps on the Stairs tells the story of Dodie and her new step-family. Along with her mother's new husband, she has acquired a prissy step-sister and a fun little step-brother. The biggest conflict Dodie has at first is how to get along with her new sister, who is so completely the opposite of her. That is, until strange things start happening in the old house by a marsh that they have rented for a family-bonding summer vacation.

Dodie begins to see and hear things that just can't be explained, and her new brother claims to have seen two ghostly girls arguing on the stairs late at night. It seems that Dodie isn't the only one who has ever had a hard time getting along with her sister in this house.

The three siblings set out to solve the mystery of two squabbling sisters who possibly drowned in the marsh years ago and are haunting the house in their unhappiness (or are they here to teach Dodie a lesson in sisterly love?) Along the way Dodie learns to accept her mother's marriage to a new man, and to find friendship with her new sister.

Footsteps on the Stairs is subtly creepy and provides many chills. It still thrills me and makes my pulse rate increase. I highly recommend this book and was so happy to see that it was reprinted in 2005. I may have to pick up a new copy (mine has disappeared somewhere in the past 17 years...sigh). Enjoy!
