4.0 out of 5 stars For Christian and Goodman April 23, 2005
By Bomojaz
Format:Audio CD
Burrell (g) Phil Woods (as/cl) Mike Mainieri (vib) Ron Carter (b) Grady Tate (d) Richard Wyands (p on one track) 1966-67.

Originally released as A GENERATION AGO TODAY, this rare album features some pretty good music in honor of the king of the modern guitar, Charlie Christian. Christian classics when he was playing with Benny Goodman such as WHOLLY CATS, A SMOOTH ONE, and SEVEN COME ELEVEN all get excellent treatments here. Phil Woods has always been among the swingingest alto sax players (I love his dynamics and logic), and he is also a clarinetist with a unique approach (on WHOLLY CATS and MOONGLOW). A very enjoyable CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kenny Burrell: For Charlie and Benny December 12, 2011
Format:Audio CD
~ Originally released as the LP "A Generation Ago Today", this CD contains the 8 tracks from the original LP plus 3 valuable unreleased tracks from the same recording sessions.
~ Kenny and crew pay tribute to Charlie Christian and Benny Goodman by recording tunes associated with the Charlie + Benny collaborations, but they are wise enough to avoid trying to duplicate the original arrangements and solos. Kenny is supported by a first-rate group, including Phil Woods on alto sax (on nine tracks) and clarinet (on two tracks), bassist Ron Carter, drummer Grady Tate, vibraphonist Mike Maneri (on three tracks) and pianist Richard Wyands (on one track). It is interesting to hear Kenny and crew update these classics and give them a modern feel. For example, Kenny gives a soft bossa nova treatment to "As Long As I Live" and a lightly swinging feel to "I Surrender Dear." "Stompin' at the Savoy," receives a more driving arrangement with Woods' brash alto sharing the spotlight in exchanges with the Kenny. Burrell kicks into high gear for "Seven Come Eleven," which is perhaps the tune most frequently associated with Charlie Christian.
~ Highly recommended for anyone familiar with the recordings of Charlie Christian with Benny Goodman and open to hearing different interpretations of those classic recordings.

After acquiring this CD I made for myself an interesting CD in which I put the original Christian-Goodman tracks followed immediately by the Kenny Burrell takes of the same tunes. The compilation CD makes for an interesting study in guitar techniques and phrasing.
