Editorial Reviews

Review

"If you've never had a dog companion, this book will give you a picture of what it's like. It's like magic." -- The Oregonian, January 20, 1998

"The perfect way to remember the timeless connection children (and adults) forge with their special four-legged friends. Highly recommended." -- The Midwest Book Review

"This book is a must for everyone who has ever loved a dog. I can't recommend it highly enough." -- Susan Chernak McElroy, author of Animals as Teachers and Healers

"When the author lost her forever dog, Martha, the impact was devastating. This captures the poignant magic between the pair." -- The Seattle Times, November 22, 1998

"Whimsical language and pastel watercolors will mesmerize children of all ages." -- Dog Fancy Magazine, May 1999

Adults and children who have lost a dog will appreciate Davis' book for what it says: Although a dog passes away, it "can never really be separated from its forever person." The loving relationship between a person and a dog is forever. If you've never had a dog companion, this book will give you a picture of what it's like. It's like magic. Dog lovers will understand once they read this celebration of the special relationship between a person and a dog. It's a quick read, with less than 30 pages, but it's a book that can be read over and over. It evokes fond memories of those happy moments between a person and a dog. That alone will make the reader smile --Portland Oregonian, January 20, 1998

More About the Author

When I was a child I had two great passions in my life - spending my days with our animals and spending my nights gazing at the starry skies, pondering the distant heavens. My mother was certain I would either become a veterinarian or an astronomer. But life has a funny way of taking us down unexpected roads, and I wound up following a business path that satisfied the left side of my brain but kept the right side quiet, longing for expression. I just couldn't stop thinking about those stars!

So I left the corporate workplace in 1996 to pursue my true heart's calling...my soul work. I was looking for a way to celebrate the creatures with whom we share this planet, and to thank them for the many gifts they had brought to me. I thought my beloved dog, Martha, would be by my side on this magical journey. I had no idea this mysterious creature, who had been born into my arms 13 years earlier, would become ill and I would have to continue on without her. As I grieved the loss of my dearest friend, I couldn't understand this was all part of a much larger plan.

I never would have believed I'd meet Jake, the magnificent dog who walked by my side when I began my journey as a writer/illustrator. I never, EVER, would have known I'd be blessed to have Dickens, Pippen, Molly & Star - a litter of 4 magical kittens - enter my life. So many miracles...all on four paws!

I didn't know I'd give birth to five books - Forever Paws, For Every Dog An Angel, For Every Cat An Angel, Old Dog & the Christmas Wish, and The Shelter Dog... books that celebrate our timeless connection with animals... books overflowing with paintings of starry skies.

I've learned much from my passions. The animals have taught me about letting go, for they so often leave long before we are ready to say goodbye. The heavens have inspired me to never give up on my dreams, for on those days when the dream seems a little far away I remember it is only resting up in the stars, waiting for me to call it back home.

Chris Davis lives in Portland, Oregon with her kitties Molly and Star.

Amazing Little Book! June 21, 2006
Format:Hardcover
Just yesterday, I had to put down my best friend of over 14 years. A very good friend of mine gave me a copy of this book that very morning, she knew how much this old dog meant to me.
I read it and even though I cried like a baby, it left me with a good feeling.
I recommend this book for adults even more than for kids... if you have ever or are about to lose your dog, it's warmth and simplicity make it very comforting and therapeutic.
I took it with me to the vet's office, and before the deed was done, I laid down next to my old guy on the office floor and read it to him, and told him how one day we'd be together again. I think he understood.
People can be transient, hypocritical, downright nasty and fleeting with their emotions and affections. The love of a dog for it's person, however, is possibly the purest, simplest and most honest love on this earth. Dogs are the kind of creatures that can make even the most skeptical believe in the existence of a higher power. Their love is absolutely unconditional and utterly faithful. God bless these beautiful, unique and wonderful animals... they abide...

The author wrote this God-blessed little book after having a wonderful vision of her beloved dog Martha in the arms of an angel; it turned her bereavement into inspiration. It should lift the heart and spirit of anyone who reads it.

I would like to make several recommendations here since there is no category as of yet specifically on animal afterlife, on-line (or in any other lists for that matter).

Because of this and the fact that there are so few books written on this subject, those in grief over the loss of a pet often find themselves desperately searching, and miss out. I would therefore like to list all the books that I know of dealing with afterlife of animals. Amazon.com has sites on all of them. You can visit each site to learn more on each respective title.

"Cold Noses at the Pearly Gates".Excellently done:inspired compassionate, fully-Biblical

"The Soul of Your Pet". Convincing, credible evidence regarding animals' existing after death.Interactions with pets that have passed on. Will defy skeptics.

"Will I See Fido in Heaven?". Solidly Christian, inspired, loving.

"For Every Dog an Angel". Angel stays with pup from birth, on. Written for children, adults will love even more. Wonderful!

"Dog Heaven". For children; adults will enjoy as well

"Cat Heaven" Children/adults

"All Dogs Go to Heaven". Well-known, has a story-line.

Not everyone understands the loss of a pet can affect you as deeply as losing one of your own children. This book is for the people who 'get' it.

I bought it originally for my husband's mother who lost her beloved dog, but he felt it was too juvenile to send to her. On the contrary, I found it sweet, whimsical and touching. I eventually gave it to a friend who was looking for a greeting card to send to another couple who had recently lost two dogs - They loved it.

It is a small, short book, beautifully illustrated in watercolor and easily read by a wide range of ages. The only dissapointment I felt is that it is basically an expanded story of the Rainbow Bridge, which if you've gone through the pain of losing a pet, and are reading this, you have probably already read it on several websites.

The book however puts it in a format that makes it convenient for giving to someone else instead of sympathy cards, which while there is more selection for pet-loss nowdays, simply don't cover it, or still come across as being written by someone who just doesn't understand what the fuss is about but feels the need to try and comfort the recipient.
